Lady Dutch soccer team advances to D9-AA semis

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch soccer team advanced to the semifinal of the District 9-AA girls' soccer tournament on Wednesday evening when they defeated the Clarion High Lady Bobcats by a 1-0 score in a first-round game played at the Angela Huey Field in Fox Township."This was a hard-fought game that could have gone either way, as both teams played really well today," said St. Marys Area Coach Kelly Carr. "Our squad played extremely well today and emerged with a hard-earned 1-0 victory.""I am extremely proud of how well the team played today considering the injuries that we have," added Carr. "Today's game was a total team victory, as all the girls contributed to this win. Our defense was excellent and we have many shots on goal, although only one found the inside of the net, which ended up being enough for us to win and advance on in the playoffs."The first half of Wednesday's game was a scoreless affair, but one that saw plenty of shots on goal and plenty of saves by the goalies. In the first 40-minute period, the St. Marys squad had 12 shots on goal, with the Clarion goalie, Brianna Nellis, getting credit for seven saves. Clarion, on the other hand, had only seven shots on goal, four of them great shots that St. Marys goalie Mia Keener made excellent saves on. Also in the first period of play, the Clarion squad had six corner kicks compared to just one for the Lady Dutch. For more on this story see the Oct. 28 edition of The Daily Press.
