Lady Crusaders hold off Brookville for 52-48 D9 League win

ECC travels to Sheffield tonightThe Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders evened their District 9 League record at 2-2 with a 52-48 victory over the Brookville Lady Raiders Saturday night at the ECCHS gym.The Lady Crusaders controlled the first half of play when they outscored the Lady Raiders by a 30-18 margin. In the second half, Brookville outscored the Lady Crusaders by a 30-22 margin.“This was a hard-fought game. Brookville played exceptionally well tonight. They are a well-coached team,” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner.“I thought we played well in the first half with only eight turnovers, but in the second half we had 15. That’s way too many times,” he said. “But on the bright side, we were able to win a close game and that experience is going to help us down the road. It’s also the end of a four-game week for us.”The Lady Crusaders had three players in double figures led by Ellie Petrosky with 12 points on five field goals and a two-for-four night from the foul line. Abbi Petrosky and Lexie Meholic each scored 10 points. Petrosky scored her points on three field goals and a four-for-seven night from the foul line. Meholic scored her points on four field goals and a two-for-two night from the foul line. Leading rebounders for Elk Catholic were Taylor DaCanal, A. Petrosky and E. Petrosky with five each.Kaitlyn Hill led Brookville with 13 points on three twos, one three and a four-for-six night from the foul line. Lanae Newsome and Karly Reinsel each added nine points.The Lady Crusaders took the early 7-0 lead as Meholic scored twice and A. Petrosky scored on a field goal and later a foul shot. Stephanie Wolfe scored on a putback for the Lady Raiders, making the score 7-2. A. Petrosky scored at the 4:46 mark and E. Petrosky scored at the 4:11 mark on a putback, 11-2. Reinsel sank one of two foul shots for Brookville. DaCanal made the score 13-3 with a field goal. Brookville went on an 8-0 run to close the gap to 13-11. A three by Hill with four seconds left in the period gave Brookville the 14-13 lead after one period.E. Petrosky opened the second quarter with a field goal on a putback. Emily Gregory scored off a steal to give Elk the 17-14 lead. Newsome sank a foul shot before DaCanal scored. Alyssa Byerly sank a foul shot for the Lady Raiders, 19-16. A. Petrosky sank two foul shots, Meholic scored on a putback and Kristy Hanes hit a three as Elk went up 26-16 with 1:45 left in the first half. Reinsel and Elk’s Karly Carnovale traded buckets. Hanes hit a two with four seconds left as the Lady Crusaders took a 30-18 halftime lead.A. converted a three-point play as Elk led 33-18. Hill and E. Petrosky exchanged field goals, 35-20. Brookville went on an 8-0 run, cutting the score to 35-28. DaCanal made it 37-28 before Hill converted two foul shots and hit a field goal. Reinsel made the score 37-34 with 2:05 left in the period. E. Petrosky scored a field goal and Carnovale hit a foul shot, 40-34. Hill hit a field goal at the buzzer, making the score 40-36 with eight minutes left.Meholic scored for ECC and Brookville scored four points, making the score 42-40. A foul shot by Chey Ross cut Elk’s lead to 42-41 as A. Petrosky fouled out. E. Petrosky gave Elk the 44-41 lead, then Newsome sank two foul shots, cutting Elk’s lead to 44-43 with 4:19 left. Gregory hit a field goal with 2:46 left. E. Petrosky sank two foul shots to give Elk the 48-43 lead, then Reinsel made the score 48-43 with 1:28 left. In the closing minutes, ECC sank six of eight foul shots, two by Carnovale and four by Gregory, to lead 52-45. Ross hit a three as the buzzer sounded, making the final score 52-48 in favor of Elk Catholic.Game notesThe Lady Crusaders are now 11-4 overall and 2-2 in District 9 League play. Elk is 4-1 in the Allegheny Mountain League.The Lady Crusaders return to action tonight when they travel to Sheffield for an AML game. Junior varsity begins at 6 p.m., with varsity set for a 7:30 p.m. start.The Lady Crusader Grade School Appreciation Night will be held on Friday, when the Lady Crusaders take on the Punxsutawney Lady Chucks in a District 9 League game.
