Bennetts Valley Elementary School third graders are making their mark on the school as they helped create and design a mural greeting visitor as they enter the building's lobby.
The 22-member class instructed by Andy Yost worked on the mural depicting the history of the school and local community.
Students worked with Chuck Purviance and Haley Swanson from the Brockway Center for Arts and Technology (BCAT) as part of the Elk County Council on the Arts Artist in Residency project.
The 240-clay tile mural will measure 10 feet by 6 feet.
It will primarily depict the elk herd, the mining industry and an outdoor scene. Across the top of the mural is a coal train car riding along the coke ovens used to turn coal into coke, an essential ingredient for manufacturing steel. Also featured on the mural is the school and its mascot, a bluejay.
