Alfred Edward Cheatle

Alfred Edward Cheatle, 80, of 638 Virginia Rd., St. Marys, died Thursday evening, Jan. 31, 2013 at the Elk Haven Nursing Home after an illness of the past year. He was born Sept. 2, 1932 in St. Marys, son of the late Frank and Catherine Caskey Cheatle. On May 25, 1957, in the Queen of the World Church, he married Doris T. Smith, who preceded him in death on Aug. 26, 2001. Mr. Cheatle was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Marys High School, Class of 1951. He retired from the Stackpole Carbon Co. in 1994 after over 40 years of service. He also had worked at the former Smith's Sport Store. He was a member of the St. Mary's Church and a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Army in the 27th Infantry Regiment and the Canine Corps in Korea. He was a member of the CMF, St. Marys Moose, PFL, the American Legion, and the St. Joseph's Society. In his younger days he was an avid bowler and a golfer. He is survived by four daughters, Helen Barr (Michael) of Kersey, Suzanne Morgan (Bruce) of Anchorage, Alaska, Judy Wren (William) of Spokane, Wash., and Mary Loken of Elk River, Minn.; five sons, Thomas Cheatle of Elizabethtown, Rt. Sgt. John Cheatle (Celia) of Colorado Springs, Colo., Wayne Cheatle (Maryann) of North Carolina, Gary Cheatle of St. Marys, and Howard Cheatle of St. Marys; 12 grandchildren, Jennie, Leslie, Matthew, Alyse, Nicole, Cory, Casey, Amanda, Ashley, Carlos, Alfred, and Catherine; a great-grandson, Kyler; three sisters, Anna Mary Kopp of St. Marys, Virginia Volovar of St. Marys, and Catherine Olson of St. Marys; two brothers, Francis Cheatle of St. Marys and Harold Cheatle of St. Marys; two sisters-in-law, Miriam Wehler of St. Marys and Elizabeth Cheatle of St. Marys; and a brother-in-law, William Smith of St. Marys. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including special nephew and niece Dan and Linda Kopp and their children Frank, LeRoy, and David.Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Josephine Sporner, Theresa Kopp, and in infancy Helen Cheatle and Henrietta Cheatle; and five brothers, Norman Cheatle, Bernard Cheatle, Jerome Cheatle, in childhood LeRoy Cheatle, and in infancy Charles Cheatle. A Mass of Christian Burial for Alfred Edward Cheatle will be celebrated in the St. Mary's Church on Monday, Feb. 2 at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Meinrad Lawson, OSB, pastor, officiating. Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen's Burial Detail. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery.
