St. Marys baseball 9-10 stars stay alive with win

The St. Marys Little League Baseball 9-10-year-old all-star squad stayed alive in the District 10 South Division with a 19-3, four-inning victory over Fox Township in an elimination game played at Memorial Park Thursday.
St. Marys will now take on Punxsutawney tonight at 6 p.m. at a site to be determined. Punxsy eliminated Brockway by a 10-0 score in four innings last night.
The St. Marys squad had 18 hits in last night’s contest. Nate Beimel and Kael Azzato each had three hits. Beimel had two doubles and a single, while Azzato had a double and two singles. Will Uberti had two doubles. Jesse McKee had a double and a single, as did Dan Wimer. Jared Groll and Alec Wehler each had two singles. Brandon Sicheri, Alex Fedus and Brady Schneider all singled.
Fox Township was limited to one hit, a single by Ryan Hepler.
Kael Azzato started on the mound for St. Marys and worked three innings, giving up one hit, walking one and striking out three. Brady Schneider worked one inning of relief, facing three batters. Shane Price started on the mound for Fox and worked 1 2/3 innings, giving up 13 hits and walking five. Ryan Hepler worked 1 1/3 innings, giving up three hits. Adam Schneider worked one inning of relief, giving up two hits, walking two and striking out one.
St. Marys lost the coin toss and was the visiting team for last night’s contest.
In the top of the first, Azzato singled with one out. He stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. Ryan Fritz walked and moved straight to second. A double by Beimel scored both Azzato and Fritz. Beimel was thrown out as he got too far off of second base on the play. Uberti doubled and scored on a double by Wimer. A single by Sicheri scored Wimer, giving St. Marys the 4-0 lead. Fox scored when Hepler led off with a single. He moved to second on an error. With one out, Hepler scored on an infield out, making the score 4-1.
St. Marys scored 11 runs in the top half of the second inning. Wehler led off with a single. He stole second and moved to third on an error. McKee walked and moved to second on a passed ball. Azzato singled, scoring both Wehler and McKee. Fritz reached base on an error and moved to second on the play, scoring Azzato. He moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a single by Beimel. Uberti doubled and Wimer reached base on a fielder’s choice as Beimel was thrown out at the plate. Sicheri walked. A single by Groll scored Uberti. A single by Wehler scored both Wimer and Sicheri. A single by McKee scored Groll. Azzato drew a walk. Wehler scored on an infield out. A double by Beimel scored both McKee and Azzato as St. Marys took a 15-1 lead. Fox Township went down in order in their half of the inning.
The third inning found Sicheri reaching base on an error. He moved to second on an error and third on a single by Groll. A sacrifice fly to center by Wehler scored Sicheri. McKee doubled with two outs. He scored on a double by Azzato, giving St. Marys the 17-1 lead. Fox scored twice in their half of the inning as Roman Surra was hit by a pitch with one out. He stole second. Hepler walked. Both Surra and Hepler scored when Caden Burke reached base on a fielder’s choice, making the score 17-3.
Schneider led off the top of the fourth with a single, moving to second on the play. He went to third on a passed ball and scored when Uberti reached base on an error. Wimer singled. Sicheri reached base on a fielder’s choice, erasing Uberti. Alec Bittler reached base on a fielder’s choice, erasing Wimer. Wehler walked to load the bases. McKee walked to score Sicheri, making the score 19-3. Fox went down in order in the home half of the fourth as St. Marys won 19-3 with the mercy rule in effect.
