SMA’s Adair Gennocro wins gold medal in 3200 run

ECC’s Kennedy Weisner wins two silver medals; ECC’s Jake Herbstritt a bronze

St. Marys Area High School junior Adair Gennocro won a gold medal at Saturday’s PIAA Track & Field Championships held at Shippensburg University by winning the Class AA 3200 run.
Gennocro won the event with a time of 10:36.22. She was seeded second in the event behind Boiling Springs’ Meredith Speakman with a time of 11:13.99. Speakman’s seed time was 11:01.57. Speakman finished in second place in 10:47.88.
Gennocro also medaled in the 1600 run with a time of 5:02.16, good for fourth place.
In the 1600 run, Elk County Catholic sophomore Kennedy Weisner took the silver medal with a time of 4:48.69. Angel Piccirillo of Homer Center took first with a time of 4:39.42. Both times broke the old PIAA record of 4:52.03 set in 1980 by Donna McLain of East York High School.
Weisner also brought home a silver medal in the 800 run, placing second with a time of 2:11.41. Piccirillo won the event with a time of 2:09.16.
Elk County Catholic’s Jake Herbstritt received a bronze medal in the high jump with a leap of 6’5”.
Also competing on Saturday were ECC’s Caleb Lecker in the AA 3200 run and SMA’s Gideon Woelfel in the AAA 3200 run. Lecker placed 16th with a time of 10:03.57. Woelfel placed 27th with a time of 10:10.84.
The St. Marys Area girls’ 4x800 relay team of Sloan Foster, Lauren McAnany, Shannon Bridges and Adair Gennocro placed 10th with a time of 9:53.17.
District 9 athletes who also won gold medals on Saturday included Brookville’s Lanae Newsome in the triple jump with a leap of 40’3.5”. Newsome was eighth in the 100 dash. Her sister, Aisha, medaled in the 300 hurdles, placing fourth with a time of 45.16 seconds.
Sheffield’s Kalil Slaughter won both the 100 and 200 dashes, while Clarion’s Bryce Straffin won the 400 dash.
On Friday, Elk Catholic’s Nicole Florio medaled in the high jump with a leap of 5’2”, good for fifth place.
Johnsonburg’s Mike Shuey won the gold medal in the javelin with a throw of 200’1”. On Saturday, Shuey placed 18th in the high jump at 5’10”.
