Senior softball stars defeat Brockway 9-7 Sunday

St. Marys meets Bradford at Eldred Tuesday

The St. Marys Little League Softball Senior all-stars opened play in the District 10 Tournament Sunday with a 9-7, eight-inning victory over the Brockway all-stars at Benzinger Park.
The game was tied at 7-all at the end of regulation. St. Marys, the visiting squad Sunday, scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to take the 9-7 lead. Cassie Daniels reached base on an error when the catcher’s throw on her bunt sailed into right field. Daniels was able to reach second, go to third and score as a result of two more throwing errors. Taylor Bellina reached base on a bunt single. Jackie Lenze reached base on an error; however, Bellina was thrown out at home on the play. Lenze wound up at third. She was able to steal home, giving St. Marys the 9-7 lead.
St. Marys had 10 hits in the contest, led by Taylor Bellina’s three singles. Cassie Wonderling tripled while Cassie Daniels, Jackie Lenze, Tiffany Wickett, Kelsey Fritz, Brooke VanAlstine and Megan McKenna all singled.
Kelsey Fritz went the distance on the mound for St. Marys, giving up six hits, walking five and striking out nine. Erica Presto went the distance for Brockway, giving up 10 hits, walking three and striking out five.
St. Marys got on the board in the top half of the first inning as Daniels reached base on a dropped third strike. Bellina reached base on a bunt single. Daniels stole third and scored on an error. Bellina stole second and moved to third on the play. She was able to score on a passed ball as St. Marys led 2-0. Brockway scored four times in the home half of the inning on two hits and three errors to take the 4-2 lead.
St. Marys left two runners stranded in the top of the second inning. In the home half of the inning, Brockway added two runs to their lead on two walks and two errors making the score 6-2.
Bellina led off the top of the third with a single. With one out, Wonderling drew a walk. A single by Wickett scored Bellina. Fritz walked to load the bases. VanAlstine hit into a fielder’s choice, allowing Wonderling to score as St. Marys cut the Brockway lead to 6-5. Brockway scored a run in the home half of the third on three hits and left a runner stranded, 7-4.
St. Marys scored a run in the top of the fourth inning when Daniels singled and stole second. With one out, Daniels scored on an infield out as St. Marys cut the Brockway lead to 7-5.
Each team left a runner stranded in the fifth inning. In the top of the sixth inning, Lenze singled with two outs. She stole second and scored when Wonderling reached base on an error. Wonderling was able to score on the play as St. Marys tied the game at 7-all. Brockway went down in order in the home half of the inning.
St. Marys was able to score two runs in the top of the eighth inning, with Brockway going down in order in the bottom of the inning as St. Marys advanced with the 9-7 win.
St. Marys will travel to Eldred on Tuesday to take on the Bradford all stars for the finals of the winner’s bracket. Bradford defeated Kane by a 7-2 score Sunday. In the loser’s bracket, Kane will travel to Brockway on Tuesday.

the girl from brockway(red) is not beusink its the shortstop hidinger. Beusink was the center feilder.
