Russian novel provides unique opportunity for ECC students

The sound of students attempting to correctly pronounce Russian names and phrases could be heard by those passing by Grace Messineo's classroom at Elk County Catholic High School on a recent Wednesday morning. Russian is not a new addition to ECC's language curriculum but rather, the exercise was a way for the seniors in Messineo's AP Literature class to gain a better understanding of the world described in Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky's novel 'Crime and Punishment,' and the person teaching them the pronunciations was Valentyn Wolfe, a member of the freshman class who was born in the Ukraine and is fluent in both Ukrainian and Russian.
