The Elk County Catholic track and field teams opened their season Tuesday by hosting the Punxsutawney squads.
The Punxsy teams swept the Elk Catholic squads. The Chucks beat the Crusaders 82-68 while the Lady Chucks edged the Lady Crusaders 76.5 to 73.5.
“We had a good opening meet today,” said ECCHS Coach John Schneider.
“Monday was actually the first day that our jumpers and hurdlers practiced on the track. Given that, I am very pleased with what I saw today. There were a lot of positive attitudes and high levels of effort on display today. Those, along with continued hard work, will be a good foundation for our future meets,” added Schneider.
The Lady Crusaders were led by double winners Abbi Petrosky, Kennedy Weisner and Tess Onink. Petrosky won the 100 and 300 hurdles, Weisner the 1600 and 800 runs, and Onink won the 400 dash and was a member of the winning 1600 relay team.
Single winners for the Lady Crusaders were Megan Dornisch in the shot put, Jessica Franco in the pole vault, Molly Eshbach in the long jump and Morgan Onink, Maggie Sorg and Helen Danz in the 1600 relay.
Leading the Crusaders was quadruple winner Jared Schaut. He won the 200 dash, 300 hurdles and triple jump, and was a member of the winning 1600 relay.
Dan Steudler was a double winner as he won the 400 dash and was a member of the winning 1600 relay.
Single winners were Joe Cooney in the 110 hurdles, Harley Thompson a 3200 run, Ben Herbstritt in the high jump, and Josh Gebauer and Andrew Wolfe in the 1600 relay.
The Elk Catholic squads return to action Saturday when they compete in the Altoona Igloo Invitational.
