Punxsutawney hands St. Marys 11-12 stars 5-0 loss

The St. Marys Little League Baseball 11-12-year-old all-stars opened play in the District 10 South Division Tournament on Monday by playing host to the Punxsutawney stars.
Punxsy came away with a 5-0 victory over St. Marys. Punxsy will now travel to Ridgway on June 29, while St. Marys will return to action on Friday, July 1, when they meet the loser of Wednesday’s DuBois vs. Brookville game.
St. Marys had three hits in last night’s game, as Dan Stauffer doubled while Jeff Wehler and Pat Hoffman each singled.
Pat Schlimm went the distance on the mound for St. Marys, going five innings, giving up six hits and striking out two. Joey DiPietro started on the mound for Punxsy and worked 5 1/3 innings, giving up two hits, walking two and striking out five. Peyton Graham worked 2/3 of an inning, giving up one hit.
Punxsy won the coin toss and was the home team. In the top half of the first inning, Brad Dippold led off with a walk for St. Marys. He moved to second and third on passed balls. The next three batters went down in order. Punsxy only sent three batters to the plate in the home half of the inning thanks to a double play, as St. Marys shortstop Jeff Wehler took the grounder, stepped on second and threw on to first.
St. Marys went down in order in the top half of the second inning. Punxsy scored two runs on a double by Dylan Huey and a home run by Jacob Tyger, making the score 2-0.
The third inning found St. Marys going down in order. Punxsy added another run on a double and a single to take a 3-0 lead.
With two outs in the top of the fourth, Stauffer doubled but was left stranded. In the home half of the inning, Punxsy added two more runs on one hit and two errors, making the score 5-0.
Pat Hoffman led off the top of the fifth with a single for St. Marys, but he was left stranded. Punxsy went in order in their half of the inning.
With one out in the top of the sixth, Jordan Romain drew a walk for St. Marys. Wehler singled down the left field line. A sacrifice fly to center by Stauffer moved the runners up a base. A fly ball to right ended the game with Punxsy on top 5-0.
In Monday’s other action in the 11-12-year-old South bracket, DuBois beat Brockway 24-2 in four innings and Brookville beat Reyn/Sykes 14-1 in five innings.
