Port Allegany comes back to edge Dutch wrestlers
The Port Allegany Gators overcame an early lead by the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestlers to come up with a 36-29 victory last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.St. Marys was able to take a 17-0 lead as Damien Wensel recorded an 8-4 decision at 103 pounds over Lucas Manning. Trenton Bowers gave the Dutch a 9-0 lead when he pinned Dalton Caden at the one-minute mark of their 112-pound match.Evan Smith made the score 14-0 when he picked up a 9-4 technical fall over Bryan Lacher at the 4:26 mark of their 119-pound match. Dutchman Alex Coudriet picked up a 4-2 decision over Marcus Borowski at 125 pounds, giving St. Marys the 17-0 lead.Port Allegany began their comeback as Chester Tanner of the Gators pinned Bill Gabor at the 53-second mark of their 130-pound match. At 135 pounds, Bradley Goodreau pinned Tyler Yetzer at the 1:54 mark of their match, cutting the Dutch lead to 17-12. Port Allegany took an 18-17 lead when Logan Warnick won by forfeit at 140 pounds.Dutchman Allan Gursky gave St. Marys a 20-18 lead as he held on for a 3-2 decision over Ben Baxter of the Gators. Alex Gular gave the lead back to the Gators when he pinned Josh Cameroni at the 1:43 mark of their 152-pound match. Ryan Kio of the Gators decisioned Mike Brennen 8-4 in their 160-pound match.Alex Geitner of the Dutch made the score 27-23 when he recorded a 7-2 decision over Rex Windsor at 171 pounds. At 189 pounds, Trent Neal of Port Allegany pinned Joe McLaughlin at the 3:10 mark of their match.Port Allegany’s Nicolas Budd pinned Jimmy Antonelli at the 3:40 mark of their 215-pound match. At 285 pounds, Zach Manning of the Gators decisioned Kevin Hoy 5-2.“We did not have a full team performance tonight. Three quarters of our team wrestled well. We need a full team effort to win these kinds of matches. Port Allegany is a good team with solid wrestlers,” said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra.“Evan (Smith) and Trenton (Bowers) wrestled well and Damien (Wensel) had a gutsy win. Allan (Gursky) had a gutsy win and stuck with our game plan. “We had kids wrestle really well. Our three freshmen had their inexperience show tonight against some veteran kids.“We’re learning and getting better.” In junior varsity action, Alex Feldbauer of the Dutch lost by a pin to Tyler Schaefer at the 1:04 mark of their 145-pound match.
