Merle C. Lecker, 94, of the Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of 537 E. Kaul Avenue, St. Marys, died on Tuesday evening, Oct. 26, 2010 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a brief illness.
He was born Sept. 5, 1916 in St. Marys, a son of the late Joseph and Anna Greitl Lecker.
On Sept. 11, 1942, he married the late Genevieve Shuttleworth Lecker, who preceded him in death on Dec. 8, 1992.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a member of Queen of the World Church. He graduated in 1938 from St. Marys Public High School and then graduated from Williamsport Technical Institute. He retired from Airco Speer in 1982 after 40 years of service and was a member of the Quarter Century Club. He served as a Borough Council member for more than 20 years and was president from 1964-1965. In 1968, he was the recipient of the American Legion Distinguished Service Award.Â
He was instrumental in the organization and direction of both the Soap Box Derby and the Knothole Association and also assisted with coaching the Knothole teams.Â He was the director of the Boys Club of St. Marys and was active with the Crippled Children's Society.Â He was also a member of the Airport Authority and the Historical Society, where he received the Distinguished Citizen Award in 2008. He was a member and past president of the CMF and a life member of the Elks.Â Merle greatly enjoyed photography and was a proud member of the Democratic party for more than 60 years.
He is survived by a daughter, Karen Lesser and her husband, Tom, of St. Marys; three sons, Dennis Lecker, Larry Lecker and his wife, Julie, and Merl Lecker, all of St. Marys; seven grandchildren,11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Anna Mae, Mrs. James Haberberger of St. Marys; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his beloved wife of more than 50 years, Genevieve Shuttleworth Lecker, he was preceded in death by five brothers: LeRoy "Red" Lecker, Dennis Lecker, Andrew Lecker, James Lecker and Alphonse Lecker in infancy, and a sister, Catherine "Sis" Robson.
Due to renovations at Queen of the World Church, a Mass of Christian Burial for Merle Lecker will be celebrated at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 325 Center St., on Friday at 10 a.m., with Rev. Michael Ferrick and Rev. Eric Vogt, OSB, as concelebrants. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the Lynch-Green Funeral Home, 151 N. Michael St., St. Marys on Thursday evening from 5 to 8 p.m.
