Local branch of Cancer Society wins award for fundraising efforts

The American Cancer Society Elk County Chapter received the Platinum Award recognizing the organization as the sixth best chapter for income growth in 2009-10 as presented by The Pennsylvania Division, Inc. Income Development.
In 2010 the Relay for Life of Elk County raised just over $81,000, surpassing their goal of $62,000.
Susan Babik of St. Marys, income development specialist for the American Cancer Society's East Central Division, including Elk County, said the organization hopes to raise $86,000.
According to information released by the local Elk County Chapter, 188 patients were served by Cancer Society programs between Sept. 2009 and August 2010.
In 2008, the most recent year for which statistics are available, the top four cancers in Elk County were lung cancer (40 percent of diagnosed cases), prostate cancer (34 percent), colorectal cancer (27 percent) and breast cancer (20 percent). There were a total of 242 cases of cancer diagnosed within Elk County in 2008.
