A familiar name and face takes over the reins of the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball program this year as Leona Hoohuli replaces the retired Bob Swanson.
Swanson retired following the 2010-2011 season after nine years at the helm of the Lady Dutch.
Coach Hoohuli has been coaching for the past 12 years. This is her first head coach position.
The Lady Dutch return six letter winners to form the nucleus of the 2011-12 squad. Those returning letter winners are seniors Jenna Anderson and Sloan Foster, juniors Adair Gennocro, DeAnna Yost, Becky Krieg and sophomore Kiana Hoohuli.
“We have six returning letter winners, which will give us some experience,” said Hoohuli. "The girls have been working hard and have a good chemistry. They’re pushing each other in practices and are very unselfish.
“We are going to have to improve our team rebounding and making good decisions with the basketball.”
Battling for the number one guard spot are juniors Adair Gennocro and DeAnna Yost.
Looking to fill the number two guard position are sophomores Cassie Daniels and Kiana Hoohuli.
The number three spot will have either seniors Jenna Anderson or Sloan Foster.
In the picture at the number four slot are junior Becky Krieg and freshman Taylor Schutz.
The number five spot will be handled by either senior Abbey Cribbs or junior Rachel Krieg.
“The team goals are the same as we’ve had in years past: Enter the state playoffs and work as a team,” noted Hoohuli.
Coach Hoohuli said she feels that the team to beat is Bradford.
“They have everyone back. However, we have some good, quality teams in our league that provide for great competition,” said Hoohuli.
Assistant coaches for the Lady Dutch are Dan Hoohuli, who will coach the junior varsity squad, and Meghan Glenn. Meghan joined the staff in the fall as the fifth grade coach.
The Lady Dutch open their season tonight as they play host to the Johnsonburg Ramettes at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
