Lady Crusader volleyball downs Lady Dutch 3-1
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader volleyball team defeated the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch by a 3-1 score in a match played at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.The Lady Crusaders won the first set 25-21. The Lady Dutch took the second set 25-17 to even the match at 1-all.The Lady Crusaders beat St. Marys 25-16 and took the final set 25-10 to win the match 3-1.“I think we were worried about coming out flat after last Thursday’s win over Bradford,” said ECCHS coach Diane Gies.“I thought we played fairly well but I would like to see more intensity. We were able to stop their middle attack,” said the coach.“We are a work in progress. We’re young but we need to play games like this one,” added Gies.“Seniors Sami Hanes, Chelsea Gregori and Abbey Cribbs played their best of the season tonight,” said St. Marys coach Erica Vogt.“They didn’t give up and played a good game when anything can happen and I was proud of the way we came back in game two,” added Vogt.The first set was a back and forth affair early. St. Marys went up 8-5 behind the serving of Cribbs. They got the serve back to make it 9-5. With Chelsie Gaton serving they moved out to a 12-5 lead on an ace. The Lady Dutch moved out to a 19-11 lead. With Jessie Ginther serving, ECC cut the lead to 19-17. Recording kills for ECC were Lexie Meholic and Taylor DaCanal. Elk got the serve back leading 21-18. With Hayley DaCanal serving the Lady Crusaders went on to win the set 25-21. Meholic had a block and a kill to record the final two points.The second set was back-and-forth with St. Marys taking an 8-6 lead with Gaton serving. With Hanes serving, St. Marys went up 12-6 as she recorded an ace and Taylor Schutz had a kill. Behind the serving of Taylor Bellina the Lady Dutch took a 17-7 lead. Cribbs and Schutz both recorded kills. St. Marys opened a 19-11 lead to go on to win the set 25-17.The third set was tied at 9-9 when Elk went on a 7-0 run behind the serving of Anna VanEerden, who had two aces. Ginther had a kill and Meholic had two. The teams traded sideouts as the Lady Crusaders went on to win 25-16 on a kill by VanEerden.The fourth set was all Elk Catholic as they opened a 12-2 lead. St. Marys closed it to 14-3 before Meholic served with Taylor Schlimm getting a kill and Meholic serving an ace. St. Marys made it 16-4 before a kill by VanEerden made it 17-4. With Helen Danz serving, ECC opened a 22-4 lead. Schlimm and Ginther each had a kill. The Lady Crusaders would go on to win the game 25-10 on an ace by Schlimm.In junior varsity action, ECC defeated St. Marys 2-1.Elk Catholic is now 7-3 on the season and will host Kane Thursday. St. Marys Area is now 6-6 on the season and will travel to Sheffield Thursday. Junior varsity action begins at 6 p.m. with varsity to follow.SMA-CurwensvilleThe St. Marys Lady Dutch squad defeated Curwensville 3-2 Monday night.Curwensville won the first set 25-18. The Lady Dutch won the second set 25-14 and took the third set 25-16. Curwensville tied the match by taking the fourth set 25-18. St. Marys won the match by winning the fifth set 15-13.
