James Edward Challingsworth Jr.

James Edward Challingsworth Jr., 81, of Doctor's Lane, Penfield, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014 at his home after a lengthy illness.
He was born Oct. 12, 1932 in Penfield, son of the late James E. and Annise Maude (Evans) Challingsworth Sr. On June 15, 1968, he married Shirley L. (Johnson), who survives.
James worked as a heavy equipment operator for many years with local coal mines and retired from BOC of St. Marys in 1995. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1953 to 1955, and continued in the Reserves until 1961. He attended Weedville Wesleyan Church, was a member of Valley Legion Post 978 and past member of Penfield Fireman's Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who enjoyed trips to Canada and competitive rifle shooting from which he has many awards. He lived for a few years in Rhode Island and the rest of his life in Penfield.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Richard (Linda) Challingsworth of Weedville, Debra Deutsch of Weedville, Edward W. Overturf of Tennessee and Lori Lynn Overturf of Ohio; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one son, Allan R. "Herky" Overturf; and one sister, Annise Mae Weidow.
A funeral service will be held for James Edward Challingsworth Jr. on Saturday, March 1 at the Weedville Wesleyan Church with Pastor Luther Nelson Jr. presiding.
Visitation will be Saturday, March 1 from 9:30-11 a.m. at the Weedville Wesleyan Church.
Military honors will be accorded by the Valley Legion Post 978 Burial Detail.
Interment will be at Morningside Cemetery in DuBois.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Kidney Care services of DRMC East, DuBois, Pa. or a favorite charity.
