Humane Society thief asks to be released

June 27, 2013

ERIE – A St. Marys man who pleaded guilty on April 18 to the theft of $500,000 from the Elk County Humane Society is asking to be released from federal custody until his September sentencing.
On June 24, Richard A. Danz filed a motion for release in which his attorneys argue that their client was incorrectly labeled a "flight risk" by prosecutors. Defense attorneys claim when Danz, age 48, and his family left their St. Marys home on Aug. 29, 2012, for Matthews, N.C., he was unaware that criminal charges had been filed against him in Elk County that same day.
