Donations for the Coaches vs. Cancer program will once again be collected during the annual varsity basketball Elk County Holiday Tournament, which is scheduled to be held this year on Wednesday, Dec. 29 and Thursday, Dec. 30 at St. Marys Area High School. The tournament is held between the varsity girls' and boys' basketball teams from St. Marys Area High School, Elk County Catholic High School, Johnsonburg Area High School and Ridgway Area High School.
Some changes have been made to the program this year, most notably that those who make a donation to the program now have a chance to get something in return. Two basketballs, one signed by all of the girls' players and coaches and the other signed by all of the boys' players and coaches, will be given away at the conclusion of the tournament on Thursday evening.
Roben Daghir, American Cancer Society outreach volunteer, explained that the winner of each ball will be selected from the individuals who purchase and fill out a Coaches vs. Cancer cutout during the event. These cutouts will be hung in the foyer outside of the gym, as was also done during last year's event.
"We decided we didn't just want to collect donations without something in return," Daghir said of the idea behind this year's event.
