Johnsonburg native Joshua Gigliotti is a proud member of the United States Marine Corps and was recently selected for promotion to Staff Sergeant.
Currently stationed in Okinawa, Japan, Gigliotti serves as the Armory Chief for 7th Communication Battalion, III Marine Headquarters Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force.
"I went to Johnsonburg (Area) High School, straight into the Marines after school, and went into the small arms tech/repair field," Gigliotti said. "My career is 'Weapons Tech,' also known as 'Armorer.'
He is the only child of Mark and Glenna Gigliotti, and has many relatives living in the area. Gigliotti has not added to the relation yet, as he is single and has no children. He is currently focused on his service in the Corps and has received nine ribbons; his personal awards are a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (NAM) for outstanding work as a production recruiter, and three Good Conduct medals.
Gigliotti said he is motivated to serve by those who came before him.
"I serve my country because I feel it's my way of giving back to the others that went and fought in World War II and Vietnam," Gigliotti said.
While Gigliotti has been able to return to the area often for holidays and other special occasions in the past, he said it might be a bit more difficult now that he is stationed in Japan.
"In my nine years of service, I have come home for every Christmas and I've been lucky; however, now that I'm in Okinawa, Japan, I'm not going to be able to come home," Gigliotti said. "I'll miss that the most these next two years I'm over here."
Editor's note: Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Staff Sergeant Gigliotti, and we thank you for your service to our nation.
