Federal court grants postponement in Smith kidnapping, carjacking trial

WILLIAMSPORT – Federal public defenders for an Emporium man charged with the August 2012 carjacking of a bank employee at gunpoint have succeeded in once again postponing the trial, this time citing the adverse impacts of federal budget sequestration cuts on their legal practice. Thomas Edward Smith, 58, of Emporium was indicted on Sept. 5, 2012 by a federal grand jury for the Aug. 8, 2012 attempted kidnapping of a female bank executive at gunpoint after an alleged dispute with the bank over a mortgage foreclosure.
