DuBOIS - Elk County Catholic’s Maria Gismondi won the District 9-AA Singles Tennis Championship Wednesday as she defeated her teammate, Laira Reuscher, in the finals.
Gismondi won the championship by defeating Reuscher 6-4, 6-3 in the championship.
Gismondi reached the finals by defeating Anna Brinkley of Brockway 10-2 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Gismondi defeated St. Marys Area’s Amy Orr 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.
Reuscher reached the finals by defeating Taylor Hepler of Brockway 10-2 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Reuscher defeated St. Marys Area’s Aubrey Wiesner 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.
“The best matches of the day were the two semifinals. They were phenomenal. Laira Reuscher came back from being down after losing the first set,” said ECCHS coach Pete Meier.
“And the match between Maria (Gismondi) and Amy (Orr) was phenomenal. Both were three-setters,” said Meier.
“These two seniors (Gismondi and Reuscher) worked on their game since their freshman year and you knew this day was coming. It’s like playing against a mirror,” said Meier.
St. Marys Area’s Orr reached the semifinals by defeating Johnsonburg’s Josie Del Rio 10-0 in the quarterfinals. SMA’s Wiesner advanced to the semifinals with a 10-0 win over Johnsonburg’s Riley Fannin.
In the first set of the championship match, Gismondi took the early 1-0 lead. Reuscher battled back to tie the score at 1-1. Gismondi would slip out to a 4-2 lead only to see Reuscher come back to knot the score at 4-all. Gismondi won the last two points to win the set 6-4.
In the second set, Gismondi jumped out to a 4-1 lead. Reuscher would cut the score to 4-2 before Gismondi went up 5-2. Reuscher made the score 5-3 before Gismondi won the final point of the match by a 6-3 score.
“We’ll take both of them to Hershey,” said Meier, referring to the PIAA Singles Tournament scheduled for Nov. 2 and 3 at the Hershey Racquet Club.
“This is a good end to a good season,” added Meier.
