Dutchmen defeat Clarion 54-39 to improve to 4-0

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team raised their record to 4-0 on the year with a 54-39 victory over the Clarion Bobcats last night at Clarion Area High School.
St. Marys used a strong first half, as they were able to build a 27-13 lead at the half. They outscored their hosts 27-26 in the second half to win the game.
“It was a good game for us. We built an early lead, then Clarion closed it a little bit in the third quarter but we were able to penetrate their zone press,” said St. Marys coach Mark Guido.
“Jimmy Werner was eight of nine from the free throw line and Justin Quiggle, in his first game back, finished with a double-double, 11 points and 10 assists,” he added.
The Dutch offense was led by Jimmy Werner with 18 points on five field goals and an eight-for-nine night from the foul line. Justin Quiggle scored 11 points on three twos, one three and a two-for-three night from the foul line.
Clarion was led by Mike Beveridge with 13 points on four twos, one three and a two-for-four night from the foul line. Sheldon Miles scored 10 points on four field goals and a two-for-three night from the foul line.
The Dutch opened the contest by taking a 14-5 first-period lead.
The second quarter saw the Dutch outscore the Bobcats 13-8 in the second quarter as they took a 27-13 halftime lead.
The third period found Clarion outscoring St. Marys 17-11 to cut the St. Marys lead to 38-30.
In the final eight minutes of the contest, St. Marys outscored Clarion 16-9 in the fourth quarter to win the game 54-39.

Game notes
The Dutch are now 4-0 on the season. They return to action next Tuesday when they play host to the Coudersport Falcons. Junior varsity action begins at 6 p.m., with the varsity set for a 7:30 p.m. start.

JVs win
The St. Marys junior varsity squad registered a 67-31 victory over Clarion.
St. Marys took a 22-13 first-period lead and outscored the Bobcats 15-7 in the second period for a 38-20 halftime lead.
The Dutch outscored the Bobcats 3-3 in the third quarter and 15-8 in the fourth quarter to win the game 67-31.
