The St. Marys Area Dutch tennis team opened their season on Saturday with a 4-3 victory over the Altoona Lions Saturday at Altoona.
“It was nice to finally be able to get out and play our first match of the season. The boys were waiting for this day to finally arrive,” said St. Marys coach Sue Lepovetsky.
At first singles, SMA’s Brandon Romain lost his match 6-2, 6-0 to James Doeing.
At second singles, Keith Meyer of the Dutch defeated Chris Reighard 6-3, 6-3.

“It was a very close match and we were able to pull out the win against a very good Altoona team,” said Coach Lepovetsky.
In exhibition matches, Mike Fox and Evan Lepovetsky played doubles and lost 8-6. Dalton Gennocro and Eric Uhl lost in a tiebreaker 9-8 (6-4). Gary Fledderman and D.J. Challingsworth won their match 8-0. Michael Brennen won his singles exhibition match by an 8-3 score.
“It was nice everyone got to play. All in all, it was a good day for not having many outdoor practices. Hopefully, the weather cooperates for all the teams to be able to practice what is needed to get better,” added Lepovetsky.
The Dutch are scheduled to return to action this afternoon when they host the Bradford Owls at 3:30 p.m. at the SMAHS courts.
