The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team held on for a 55-49 victory over the Oswayo Valley Green Wave last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
While the Dutch led from the second quarter on, they could not build much of a lead until there was only 2:12 left in the contest, when they went up by 13, 54-41. However, Oswayo Valley then scored eight unanswered points to cut the Dutch lead to 54-49 with 1:11 left. The lone point scored in the final minutes of play was a foul shot by Dutchman Ryan Hockman, making the score 55-49.
â€śI was a little disappointed in the way we shot the ball tonight. We had a lot of clean looks but were not able to convert,â€ť said St. Marys coach Mark Guido.
â€śOur defense played well and kept us in the lead tonight,â€ť added Guido.
The Dutch were led offensively by Ryan Mancuso with 14 points on six field goals and a two-for-five night from the foul line. Jimmy Werner and Bob Vollmer each added 12 points. Werner scored his on five field goals and a two-for-two night from the line. Vollmer scored his points on six field goals.
Camden Nolan led the Green Wave with 16 points on three twos, one three and a seven-for-10 night from the foul line. Taylor Stanley scored 13 points on three twos, two threes and a one-for-two night from the foul line. Nick Gross scored 10 points, two twos and two threes.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with each team taking a one or two-point lead. The game was tied four times during the first eight minutes of play. With the game tied at 10-all, Ryan Hockman scored for St. Marys, 12-10. Stanley hit a three for OV with 1:07 left. Dylan Reigel hit a three for the Dutch with 47 seconds remaining to give St. Marys the 15-13 lead after one period of play.
Werner and Nick Gross traded buckets to open the second quarter. Werner scored for the Dutch, with Michael Prince sinking two foul shots for OV, 19-17. Dutchman Ryan Uhl scored on a putback and Vollmer scored to give St. Marys the 23-17 lead with 3:04 left in the half. Gross scored for the Green Wave to make it 23-19. Uhl made a foul shot, giving St. Marys the 24-19 advantage. Nolan sank two foul shots for OV, 24-21. Hockman scored for St. Marys, giving them the 26-21 halftime lead.
The third quarter was also a back-and-forth affair, with St. Marys able to maintain a four-point lead for the most part as they led 36-32 with eight minutes remaining. Mancuso and Werner led the Dutch with four points each while Hockman added a two.
Buckets by Vollmer and Werner gave St. Marys the 40-32 lead with 7:30 left in the game. Nolan sank a foul shot before Vollmer scored for the Dutch. A three by Gross and a foul shot by Stanley cut the St. Marys lead to 42-37 with 5:47 left in the game. Vollmer scored on a putback and Reigel added two foul shots, 46-37. Stanley and Mancuso traded field goals. Reigel gave the Dutch the 50-39 lead. Trevor Howard and Mancuso traded buckets to make the score 52-41. A putback by Mancuso made it 54-41. OV scored eight unanswered points, making the score 54-49 with 1:11 left. That was as close as the Green Wave got, as the Dutch held on for the 55-49 victory.
The Dutch are now 2-0 on the season. They will return to action Wednesday when they travel to Port Allegany to take on the Gators. Junior varsity tips off at 6 p.m., with the varsity to follow at 7:30 p.m.

The St. Marys junior varsity evened their record at 1-1 with a 67-27 win over the Green Wave.
St. Marys took a 9-5 first-period lead and outscored OV 17-5 in the second quarter to take a 26-10 halftime lead.
The Dutch outscored OV 23-12 in the third period and 18-5 in the fourth quarter to win the game 67-27.
