Dutch baseball rallies to beat Brookville Raiders 10-8

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team came up with two runs in the home half of the sixth inning to defeat the Brookville Raiders by a 10-8 score on a chilly Wednesday afternoon at Berwind Park.
The game was a back-and-forth affair, with the Dutch going up 3-0 in the first inning. A grand slam by Brookville’s Dustin Dombrowski gave the Raiders the 4-3 lead in the second inning. The Dutch took the 6-3 lead in the third inning. Brookville would take an 8-6 lead in the fifth. St. Marys tied the game in the home half of the fifth 8-8 and would get the eventual two winning runs in the sixth inning.
“We played well today. We gave up a little, then came back,” said St. Marys coach Tony Azzato. “We have to learn to put teams away. The guys are playing a lot of baseball and they have to keep their heads in the game.”
“We executed today. We got the bunts down and hit with runners in scoring position,” added Azzato.
St. Marys had 14 hits in the contest. Branden Tyger went four-for-four with a double and three singles. Ryan Uhl had two doubles, while Jordan Weinzierl and Luke Nicklas each had two singles. Kevin Hoy doubled. Getting singles were Justin Quiggle, Nate Geist and Brandon Vollmer.
Dalton Kline started on the mound for the Dutch and went three innings, giving up two hits, walking four and striking out two. Mitchell Meyer worked 1 1/3 innings, giving up three hits, walking three and striking out one. Ryan Uhl worked 1 2/3 innings, giving up one hit and striking out three. Jordan Weinzierl worked one inning of relief, getting the batters he faced on two ground outs and a fly out.
Jared Heschke started on the mound for Brookville, going three innings, giving up seven hits and striking out two. Anthony Black worked two innings, giving up four hits, walking two and striking out one. Tyler Dombrowski worked one inning of relief, giving up three hits ands walking two.
Brookville left two men on base in the top of the first inning. Quiggle led off the home half of the inning with a single. He stole second. Weinzierl was hit by a pitch. With one out, Uhl doubled to score both Quiggle and Weinzierl. With two outs, Tyger singled, scoring Uhl to give the Dutch the 3-0 lead.
A grand slam by Dustin Dombrowski gave Brookville the 4-3 lead after the top of the second. The Dutch went in order in their half of the inning.
Brookville went in order in the third inning. Weinzierl led off with a single for the Dutch. A double by Hoy scored Weinzierl. Hoy moved to third on an error. A single by Nicklas scored Hoy. Tyger doubled, sending Nicklas to third. Nicklas scored on a well- executed squeeze bunt by Geist to give the Dutch the 6-4 lead.
The Raiders made the score 6-5 with a run in the top of the fourth inning. The Dutch left the bases loaded in their half of the inning.
A three-run home run by Zane Hackett in the top of the fifth inning gave the Raiders the 8-6 lead. Tyger led off the home half of the inning with a single. Geist singled, as did Brandon Vollmer, to load the bases. With one out, Quiggle reached base on a fielder’s choice, scoring Tyger. A single by Weinzierl scored Geist to tie the game at 8-all.
Brookville left a runner on base in the top of the sixth. In the home half of the inning, Uhl led off with a single. Nicklas reached base on a bunt single. A single by Tyger scored Uhl, sending Nicklas to third. A sacrifice fly to left by Geist scored Nicklas to give the Dutch the 10-8 lead.
Weinzierl put the Raiders down in order in the top of the seventh to give the Dutch the 10-8 win.
St. Marys is in action today when they host DuBois at 4:15 p.m.
