The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team saw their record slip to 2-5 on the season as they dropped a doubleheader Saturday at Berwind Park.
The Dutch lost to the DuBois Beavers by a 5-0 score in a game that was picked up in the bottom of the first inning with DuBois on top 1-0.
The second game of the day saw the Dutch lose a 10-2, eight-inning game to the Williamsport Millionaires. The game was tied at 2-all at the end of regulation, but Williamsport scored eight runs on seven hits in the top of the eighth to win the game.
SMA vs. DuBois
The Dutchmen were limited to two hits in the contest by DuBoisâ€™ Dom Kriner.
Getting the two hits for St. Marys were Luke Nicklas with a double and Brandon Vollmer with a single. Kriner went the distance for DuBois, giving up two hits, walking two and striking out nine. Bob Vollmer went the distance for the Dutch as he gave up nine hits, walked one and struck out four.
For this game, DuBois was the home team. In the top of the first inning, St. Marys stranded a runner. In the home half of the inning, Peterson homered with two outs for DuBois. The Beavers would add two more runs in the inning to take a 3-0 lead.
The top of the second found St. Marys stranding a runner. DuBois scored another run in the home half of the inning to take a 4-0 lead. The Dutch only sent three batters to the plate in the top of the third, while DuBois left one man on base.
The fourth inning found the Dutch going down in order. DuBois left two men stranded in their half of the inning.
The fifth inning found St. Marys leaving Nicklas stranded after he hit a two-out double. DuBois scored a run on two errors to increase their lead to 5-0 in the home half of the fifth.
St. Marys went down in order in the top half of the sixth inning. DuBois left a man stranded in their half of the inning.
The Dutch left a man on base in the top half of the seventh inning as the Beavers recorded the 5-0 win.
SMA vs. Williamsport
In the second game of the day, Jared Fagnano led the game off with a home run for Williamsport, giving the Millionaires the 1-0 lead. The Dutch left the bases loaded in the home half of the first inning.
Williamsport took a 2-0 lead as they scored a run on three hits and left two men stranded, making the score 2-0. St. Marys went down in order in their half of the inning.
The Millionaires went in order in the top of the third inning. The home half of the third saw Bob Vollmer lead off with a single for the Dutch. Jordan Weinzierl reached base on a fielderâ€™s choice, erasing Vollmer. A home run by Kevin Hoy knotted the game at 2-all.
Williamsport stranded one and the Dutch two in the fourth inning. Both teams stranded two runners in the fifth inning.
The sixth inning saw Williamsport leave two runners on base while St. Marys left one man stranded.
Thanks to a double play, the Millionaires only sent three batters to the plate in the top of the seventh. St. Marys went down in order in their half of the inning.
The top of the eighth found Williamsport erupting for eight runs on seven hits and three errors to open a 10-2 lead. The Dutch stranded a runner in the home half of the inning as Williamsport won the game 10-2.
The St. Marys offense was led by Kevin Hoy with a home run and a single. Bob Vollmer, Ryan Uhl, Mitchell Meyer, Nate Geist and Justin Quiggle all singled.
Hoy stared on the mound for the Dutch and worked seven-plus innings, giving up nine hits, walking three and striking out two. Weinzierl worked one inning of relief, giving up four hits and striking out one.
â€śThe final score does not reflect how well we played today,â€ť said St. Marys coach Tony Azzato of the Williamsport game. â€śWe played an outstanding game. Kevin Hoy threw strikes, keeping the ball down and kept them off-balance. The defense came to play today and we had that big double play in the sixth inning.â€ť
â€śWeâ€™re coming along. Thereâ€™s a lot of baseball to go,â€ť he added.
St. Marys is in action today as they travel to Punxsutawney to take on the Chucks in a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m. The first game is a completion of the game played in St. Marys, with the second game being the regularly scheduled game.
