The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team evened their record at 8-8 with a 14-3, five inning win over the Ridgway Elkers Friday at Berwind Park.
The Dutch scored a total of 10 runs in the third and fourth innings to put the game away.
â€śNow is the right time for us to start meshing and we really are,â€ť said St. Marys coach Tony Azzato.
â€śWe knew as a staff what this team is capable of and now we are seeing it. We have seen improvement all year and now theyâ€™re getting it together at the right time,â€ť said Azzato.
â€śWe played well today and Iâ€™m happy with that,â€ť added Azzato.
Kevin Hoy started on the mound for the Dutch and worked three innings giving up four hits and striking out five. Luke Nicklas worked two innings giving up two hits and striking out six.
Zach McKnight started on the mound for Ridgway and gave up two hits and two walks. Alex Dickant worked 2 2/3 innings of relief giving up four hits and walking one. Lou Stilwell worked one inning of relief giving up two hits, walking four and striking out one. Ben Jaques worked 1/3 of an inning giving up one hit and striking out one.
The Dutch had nine hits led by Kevin Hoyâ€™s three-run homer in the first inning. Ryan Uhl and Bob Vollmer each had two singles while Luke Nicklas, Branden Tyger, Robert Watts and Nate Geist all singled.
For Ridgway, Josh Mitchell had a home run and a single, Jesse Reynolds two singles, Ben Jaques and Jesse Gardner each had a single.
Ridgway went down in order in the top of the first inning. Justin Quiggle led off with a walk for the Dutch. He stole second and third. Jordan Weinzierl walked and Hoy followed with a home run to left field giving St. Marys the 3-0 lead.
Ridgway left a runner on base in the top of the second. Bob Vollmer led off with a single for St. Marys going to third on the play. A sacrifice fly to left by Quiggle scored Vollmer to make the score 4-0.
Reynolds led off the top of the third with a single for Ridgway. He stole second and scored on an infield single by Mitchell making the score 4-1. In the home half of the inning, Nicklas walked with one out. He stole second and went to third when Tyger reached base on an error. Geist singled to load the bases. A single by Bob Vollmer scored Nicklas, Tyger and Geist. Vollmer wound up on third on a two-base error. Quiggle reached base on an error scoring Vollmer making the score 8-1 in favor of the Dutch.
Nicklas struck out the side in the top of the fourth. Nicklas led off the home half of the inning with a single. Watts singled and Dalton Kline walked to load the bases. Luke Schreiber hit into a fielderâ€™s choice erasing Nicklas at home. A walk by Vollmer scored Watts. With one out, Mitchell Meyer reached base on an error scoring Kline. A walk to Hoy scored Schreiber. A single by Uhl emptied the bases as Uhl wound up on third on a two-base error as St. Marys took a 14-1 lead.
Reynolds singled with one out in the top of the fifth. He stole second and scored on a home run by Mitchell making the final score 14-3 in favor of the Dutch.
St. Marys returns to action Monday when they host the Coudersport Falcons.
Ridgway hosts the Brockway Rovers Monday at 4 p.m.
