Donna (Dean) Lerch, 68, of Brockway, died on Wednesday, Oct, 30, 2010 following a lengthy illness.
She was born on March 29, 1942 in DuBois, the daughter of the late Donald and Ruth (Davis) Dean.
She was a 1960 graduate of Brockway High School and traveled throughout the U.S., living in Minnesota, Michigan and Florida. She later returned to her hometown of Brockway. She was a 1981 graduate, summa cum laude, from DuBois Business College as a medical secretary. She also attended Penn State DuBois and Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. She was employed at Brockway Glass, DuBois Hospital and Maple Avenue Hospital prior to beginning her career as a teacher at DuBois Business College, where she trained students as medical assistants.
She was known by her students as a teacher who cared about them not only as a group, but also individually. She will be remembered as a great mentor to her students. Her career as a teacher spanned two decades, and she taught her students the importance of community involvement by fundraising and providing Christmas, Easter and other holiday celebrations for the children at Pentz Run Youth Services Inc. She also volunteered for Agape and other human service organizations.
She became an EMT in the early 1990s. She was a member of Professional Secretaries International, the American Association of Medical Transcriptionists and served on the board for Pentz Run Youth Services Inc. In 2001, she joined the board of directors at DuBois Business College. She was also active in the Lane Mills United Methodist Church in Brockway. Donna loved children, her students and her cats.
She is survived by a brother, Jon Dean of Brockway; her cats, Scamper and Punkin; two uncles, Alvin Anderson and James Dean; several cousins; and her neighbors, the Reddinger family.
Funeral services for the late Donna (Dean) Lerch will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Carlson-Shugarts Funeral Home, Inc. in Brockway, with Rev. Clair Lundberg officiating.
Burial will follow in Wildwood Cemetery in Brockway.
Friends and family are invited to gather at Carlson-Shugarts Funeral Home on Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday to pay their respects.
Memorial donations may be made to the Lane Mills United Methodist Church in Brockway.
