Curwensville wins District 9-A football crown

The Curwensville Golden Tide captured the District 9 Class A football championship Saturday afternoon by defeating the Port Allegany Gators by a 37-21 score. The game was played at Frank Varischetti Field in Brockway.
The Tide scored 12 points in the first period of play to take a 12-0 lead. The Gators came back with a touchdown in the second quarter, cutting the Curwensville lead to 12-7 at the half.
Curwensville put 18 points on their side of the board in the third quarter while limiting Port to a touchdown. Curwensville led 30-13 after three quarters of play.
In the fourth period Port Allegany outscored Curwensville 8-7, making the final score to 37-21 in favor of the Golden Tide.
Curwensville, now 11-1, will meet Farrell, the District 10 champ, this Friday or Saturday at a site and time to be announced. Farrell beat Mercyhurst Prep 39-0 Friday.
In action Friday night, Brockway, the District 9 champion, defeated the District 8 champion Oliver, 44-14, in a game played at Clarion University.
The Rovers took a 9-0 lead after the first quarter, then outscored Oliver 21-6 in the second quarter for a 30-6 halftime lead.
Brockway put 14 unanswered points on the board in the third quarter to take a 44-6 lead into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter Oliver scored eight points, making the final score 44-14 in favor of Brockway.
Brockway will now meet South Fayette on Friday or Saturday at a site and time to be announced. South Fayette defeated Aliquippa 19-6 Saturday.
The District 9-AAA champion Clearfield Bisons advanced with a 42-26 victory over Shikellamy, the District 4 champion.
Shikellamy took a 14-7 first-period lead. Clearfield came back in the second quarter to score 21 unanswered points to take a 28-14 halftime lead.
The Bisons scored 14 points in the third quarter, while Shikellamy scored 12 in the fourth period as Clearfield recorded the 42-26 victory.
