DuBois wrestlers down Dutchmen 40-25

The DuBois Beaver wrestling team advanced to the finals of the District 9 Class AAA team championship by handing the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch squad a 40-25 loss last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Beavers will now meet top seed Clearfield Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the DuBois Area High School for the District 9-AAA title. The Dutchmen were seeded second and the Beavers third.
In last night’s match, the Beavers opened a 30-10 lead with five matches remaining to hold off the Dutch.

Crusaders hang on to defeat DuBois Area 65-51

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders came up with a big District Nine League victory over the scrappy DuBois Area Beavers by a 65-51 score in a game played at the Aaron J. Straub gym at Elk Catholic.
The game was a game of runs, as each team had several runs throughout the contest. At times during the contest, it looked like the Crusaders might run away with the game, but then the Beavers would put together a run of their own to get back into the game.

Crusaders top Sheffield to win AML North

Elk County Catholic's Crusaders wrapped up the AML North Division title last evening with a 74-47 victory over the visiting Sheffield Area High Wolverines in a game played at the Aaron J. Straub gym at Elk Catholic.
With the win, the Crusaders will host the No. 2 team out of the South Divison on Friday, Feb. 18, for the right to play in the AML championship game on Saturday, Feb. 19 at St. Marys Area High School.

Lady Crusaders roll over Lady Wolverines 61-14

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team ran their Allegheny Mountain League North Division record to 5-1 with a 61-14 victory over the Sheffield Lady Wolverines last night at Sheffield.
The Lady Crusaders were able to outscore their hosts 35-6 in the first half and 26-8 in the second 16 minutes of play.
“I thought we ran the court well tonight,” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner.
“Our shooting percentage from the field and the line continue to improve. We are continuing to improve with each game.”

Lady Crusaders hold off Brookville for 52-48 D9 League win

ECC travels to Sheffield tonight

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders evened their District 9 League record at 2-2 with a 52-48 victory over the Brookville Lady Raiders Saturday night at the ECCHS gym.
The Lady Crusaders controlled the first half of play when they outscored the Lady Raiders by a 30-18 margin. In the second half, Brookville outscored the Lady Crusaders by a 30-22 margin.
“This was a hard-fought game. Brookville played exceptionally well tonight. They are a well-coached team,” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner.

Lady Crusaders roll over Johnsonburg Ramettes 51-22

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders picked up their 10th victory of the season on Friday night, rolling over the Johnsonburg Ramettes by a 51-22 score in an AML North game played at the Aaron J. Straub Gymnasium on the Elk Catholic campus.
The Lady Crusaders jumped out to a 12-0 lead, only to have the Ramettes cut it to three by the end of the first quarter. The second quarter found the Lady Crusaders shutting out the Ramettes; then in the second half, it was all Elk County, as they outscored the Ramettes 33-13.

Long-range 3s lift Crusaders to win over Johnsonburg

JOHNSONBURG – Using a white-hot night of shooting, the Crusaders toppled the Rams 52-45 Friday night behind eight scorching 3-pointers.
While the Rams remained in striking distance the entire game, they were unable to overcome being outscored 20-10 in the second quarter.
"With 10 turnovers in the first half, we cut it down to three in the second half so I thought we started playing in the second half compared to the first half," said Johnsonburg head boys' varsity basketball coach Bill Shuey. "We had a shot there, but we fell asleep a couple times and gave up some easy buckets."

Brookville hands Dutchmen 42-35 D9 League loss

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team saw their District 9 League record slip to 4-2 on the year with a 42-35 loss to the Brookville Raiders last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
While the Dutch held a 23-15 halftime lead, they only were able to score 12 points in the second half as the Raiders outscored them 27-12 in the final 16 minutes of play.
“We only scored 12 points in the second half. It’s tough to win when you don’t break the 40-point mark,” said St. Marys coach Mark Guido.

St. Marys Area swim teams split with DuBois squads

ST. MARYS - The St. Marys Area High School swim and dive team held their last meet before the halfway mark when they met the DuBois Beavers at home on Thursday night. The evening was not short on excitement, as it took until the very last event to determine the winner of the girls’ meet, with the Lady Dutch falling short by only four points with a final score of 92-88.

Smethport wrestlers edge Flying Dutchmen 37-32

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestling squad suffered a tough 37-32 loss to the Smethport Hubbers Thursday night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Hubbers were able to move out to an 18-0 lead. The Dutch battled back to cut the Hubber lead to 31-20. Dutchman Jimmy Antonelli picked up a pin at 215 and Kevin Hoy recorded a pin at 285 to give the Dutch the 32-31 lead. Unfortunately, Smethport picked up a forfeit win at 103 pounds to win the match.
“We just didn’t do the job tonight that we needed to do,” said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra. “We couldn’t overcome the bonus points.”
