ECCHS track/field teams should be good

The Elk Country Catholic Lady Crusaders and Crusaders track and field squads will be anchored by 26 returning letter winners and a defending state champion. The Lady Crusaders will have 12 returning letter winners, including defending state champion Megan Dornisch in the shot put, while the Crusaders will have 14 returning letter winners.

Eight letter winners returning for ECC tennis

Eight letter winners will anchor the Elk County Catholic Crusaders tennis team as they open the 2011 boys' tennis season this afternoon when they host the Johnsonburg Area Rams at Benzinger and Memorial parks.
Three-year senior letter winner Jarid DeCarli will be leading the Crusaders this season as Kyler Breakey and Kevin Detsch, two-year senior letter winners, along with one-year senior letter winner Nate Dattoli and newcomers Darren Simons and Tyler Herzing, will be counted on by Coach Nick Caggiano to provide the senior leadership.

Lady Crusaders softball team returns six starters

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders softball team returns six starters from the 2010 team, which finished the season with a 22-1 record (best in the school's history). They won the District 9-A title, the Elk County Tournament for the 10th straight year, went undefeated in the regular season with an 18-0 record, went 3-0 in the District playoffs, and advanced to the second round of the PIAA championships.

Crusaders baseball squad loaded with veterans

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders baseball team returns 10 letter winners from the 2010 squad, which won the District 9-A title and went into the second round of the PIAA playoffs before being eliminated.
Of the 10 returning letter winners, eight are seniors: Zac Brody, Jake Cortina, Ben Daghir, Luke Daghir, Ricky Pearsall, Kyle Schneider, Sam Schneider and Eric Wehler. The other two returning letter winners are junior Pat Brennen and sophomore Jack Herzing.

Elk Catholic holds Winter Athletic Awards program

The Winter Athletic Awards program honoring the winter sports athletes at Elk County Catholic High School was held on Wednesday evening. The program opened with an invocation by Father Ross Miceli, followed by the welcome by ECC Athletic Club President Chris Schneider. Principal Sandy Florig gave an overview of the program, followed by acknowledgements by Athletic Director Aaron Straub.

ECC-SMA Alumni Football sign ups Sunday, March 27

The ECC-SMA Alumni Football weekend has been set for Saturday, May 21.
Sign ups for the affair are scheduled for this Sunday, March 27. They will be held from noon until 2 p.m. in the St. Marys Area High School cafeteria. Participants are asked to bring proof of age and health insurance.
This year they are adding baseball and softball as well as a cross country run which will be open to all ages. Sign ups for these events will be held at the same time.

St. Marys Area holds winter sports banquet

The St. Marys Area High School Winter Sports Banquet was held Tuesday night honoring those student-athletes who participated in boys’ and girls’ basketball, gymnastics, wrestling and boys’ and girls’ swimming, along with the varsity cheerleaders.
Following dinner in the cafeteria, the group adjourned to Carpin Auditorium for the awards portion of the program.
Activities Director Terry Straub welcomed everyone to the affair in the auditorium.

Elk Catholic ends season with 66-47 loss to Lincoln Park

CLARION - The Elk County Catholic Crusaders basketball season came to a close on Tuesday night as they were defeated by the District 7-2 Lincoln Park Charter School by a 66-47 score in the second round of the PIAA State Class A Playoffs held at Clarion University.

SMA finishes season with outstanding 22-2 record

CLARION - The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team was eliminated from the PIAA Class AAA tournament on Saturday by a 69-23 score by the New Castle Hurricanes. The first-round game was played at Clarion University’s Waldo Tippin Gymnasium.
The Hurricanes jumped out to an early lead in the contest, opening a 24-4 advantage after the first eight minutes of play. In the second quarter, they outscored the Lady Dutch by a 27-8 margin to take a 51-12 halftime lead.

Bishop Guilfoyle defeats Lady Crusaders 36-19

ALTOONA - The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders' season came to on end on Saturday afternoon at the Altoona Area High School gym, as they were defeated in the opening round of the girls' PIAA Class A State Championship tournament by two-time defending state champion Bishop Guilfoyle. The Lady Marauders handed the Lady Crusaders a 36-19 loss in that opening-round game.
