Salter breaks PSU DuBois 1,000-point scoring mark

DUBOIS - Josh Salter became the fifth player in Penn State DuBois basketball history to break the 1,000-point scoring mark Friday evening against St. Vincent College. 
Salter, named to the PSUAC All-Conference team at Penn State DuBois this year, led the team in scoring with 18 points in an 87-64 loss to St. Vincent, brining his total to 1,006 points. 
Salter also led the team in scoring on Saturday with 31 points against tournament host Mt. Aloysius in the consolation game. Salter finished the weekend with 1,037 career points. Josh was also named to the All-Tournament Team.

Gennocro, Weisner receive all-state recognition

St. Marys Area High School sophomore Adair Gennocro and Elk County Catholic High School freshman Kennedy Weisner were named to the Pennsylvania Track and Field Coaches Association (PTFCA) all-state cross country second team.
Gennocro, who won the District 9-AA individual championship, placed third third overall at the PIAA meet held Nov. 6. During the 2010 season, she also set four course records at the St. Marys Area, District 9, Brookville and Punxsutawney courses.

Curwensville, Port Allegany win Class A football playoff games

The Curwensville Golden Tide will meet the Port Allegany Gators for the District 9 Class A football championship either this Friday or Saturday at a site and time to be announced.
Curwensville handed the Cameron County Raiders a 22-13 loss Saturday evening in the second game of a doubleheader played at Brockway.
In the first game, Port Allegany eliminated the Redbank Valley Bulldogs by a 24-17 score.
After a scoreless first quarter, Curwensville outscored the Raiders by a 15-13 margin in the second period of play.

St. Marys Area honors fall sports athletes

The St. Marys Area High School held their Fall Sports Banquet Wednesday night. The banquet portion of the evening was held in the school cafeteria, with the awards taking place in Carpin Auditorium following a welcome by Terry Straub, SMAHS Activities Director.
The first coach to the podium was golf coach Dan Vollmer. Vollmer recognized his assistant coach, Travis Wendel, while noting that his squad finished with a 3-9 record. He said that there is more to a team’s success than their record, and that his squad had positive behavior and improved as the season progressed.

The St. Marys Area High School fall sports banquet will be held this evening beginning at 6 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.
Following dinner, the group will adjourn to the Carpin Auditorium for the awards portion of the evening.

Lady Crusader volleyball season ends at Regional

ECC finishes regional with 1-2 record
CLARION - The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader volleyball team saw their season come to an end Saturday at the PIAA Regional Tournament held at Clarion Area High School.
Elk Catholic competed against Northern Cambria, Bishop Canevin and Saegertown for one of the top two spots that would qualify them for this weekend’s PIAA championships at York.
Northern Cambria won the tournament with a 3-0 record. Elk Catholic, along with Saegertown and Bishop Canevin, all finished with a 1-2 record, necessitating a playoff.

Port Allegany edges Crusaders 47-40 in four overtimes

Elk County Catholic closed out the 2010 football season on Friday night as they lost a 47-40, four overtime thriller to the Port Allegany Gators in the opening round of the District 9-A playoffs at Dutch Country Stadium.
Both teams turned in outstanding performances last night in a game that was exciting from start to finish.

Elk County Catholic recognizes fall sports athletes

The Elk County Catholic High School held its annual Fall Athletic Awards program on Wednesday evening in the high school auditorium. Principal Sandy Florig opened the program with an invocation and an overview of the evening’s activities. Elk County Catholic Athletic Association president Chris Schneider welcomed the parents and athletes and informed the group of the upcoming Athletic Association and school events. He also noted that the varsity programs at the school presently have a 100-16-2 record so far this season.

Crusaders play host to Gators Friday in 9-A playoffs

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders football team will open play in the District 9 Class A playoffs Friday night by playing host to the Port Allegany Gators.
Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Dutch Country Stadium.
The Crusaders of coach Travis Skrzypek enter the playoffs as the second-ranked team out of the Allegheny Mountain Football League (AML) with a 7-2 record.
The Crusaders opened the season with a six-game winning streak, having defeated Cameron County 34-12, Otto-Eldred 56-16, Coudersport 26-21, Port Allegany 27-20, Johnsonburg 34-8 and Kane 27-13.

SMA’s Brittany Orr MVP of UAVSL North School

The Upper Allegheny Valley Soccer League (UAVSL) recently announced the all-stars teams for the league’s three divisions, North, South and Central.
Brittany Orr of the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch was named the MVP of the Girls’ North School team. Orr, a senior, is joined by Kane seniors Tina Mosier and Andrea Saquin, Port Allegany’s Brianna Evens, a senior, and junior Jordan Edgell, Ridgway’s Courtney Bush, a junior, Bryton Dybowski, a senior, sophomore Rhianon Fowler and junior Amanda Maddalena, Smethport senior Elizabeth Dittman and St. Marys junior Lauren Challingsworth.
