SMA’s Brandon Romain wins D9-AA Single crown

DuBOIS - St. Marys Area’s Brandon Romain won the District 9-AA Singles Tennis Championship Monday afternoon at the DuBois Area High School courts.
Romain defeated DuBois Central’s David Gangeware 6-1, 6-1 in the championship match.
Brandon started the day by defeating Brockway’s Fabio Fortunato 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Romain beat DuBois Central’s Kevin Blakely 6-2, 6-0 to reach the finals.
Romain’s teammate Keith Meyer lost in the quarterfinals to Elk County Catholic’s Ben Wortman 6-4, 3-6, 0-6.
Wortman lost in the semifinals to DCC’s Gangewere 6-2, 6-3.

SMA's Rachel Ginther tosses no-hitter against Brookville

Rachel Ginther pitched a no-hitter on Monday afternoon at the St. Marys Area softball field against the visiting Brookville Lady Raiders. The Lady Dutch won the game in five innings by a 12-0 score. The victory was the 10th of the season for the Lady Dutch.
Ginther was one pitch away from a perfect game, having retired 14 straight batters before issuing a walk to the 15th batter after running the count to 3-2.
"Rachel was definitely in command of her pitches today," said Coach Manny Gerarge of the Lady Dutch. "She was in a zone, as she was throwing strikes."

Ryan Uhl pitches no-hitter as Dutch win 12-0

BROOKVILLE — St. Marys Area’s Ryan Uhl reared back and fired, unleashing a fastball that Brookville's Brandon Bietz couldn't catch up to in the fifth inning Monday in Brookville.
Uhl fanned 12 Brookville (2-8) batters and picked up his first career no-hitter during the Flying Dutchmen’s (6-7) 12-0 win in five innings.
He missed hurling a perfect game after walking the Raiders' Seth Connor in the fourth inning.
Uhl could hardly hide his excitement after the game.

Crusaders capture county baseball tourney title

The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team captured the 2011 Elk County Baseball Tournament crown Saturday afternoon at Berwind Park by defeating the Johnsonburg Rams by a 10-6 score in the title game.
The Crusaders were able to score at least one run in five of the six innings at the plate.
“We hit the ball when we had to,” said ECCHS coach Father Eric Vogt.

Dutch beat Ridgway 10-0 in consolation game

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team took third place in the Elk County Baseball Tournament by defeating the Ridgway Elkers by a 10-0 score in six innings Saturday at Berwind Park.
The Dutch used the one-hit pitching of Nate Geist to record the victory over Ridgway. Geist went the distance for the Dutch, giving up only one hit--a single in the top of the sixth-- walking four, and striking out six.
D.J. Skraba started on the mound for Ridgway, going 5 1/3 innings and giving up 11 hits, walking two and striking out three. Zack McKnight faced two batters,giving up two hits.

Lady Dutch win county softball tournament crown

St. Marys used a dominating pitching performance and powerful hitting in a 7-0 win over Elk County Catholic in the championship game of the Elk County Softball Tournament Friday at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School in Ridgway.
"The girls came to play," St. Marys coach Manny Gerarge said. "The girls wanted it, they went out and gave 100 percent. We tell them to leave it on the field and they did."
Rachel Ginther had 13 strikeouts and two walks in a 1-hit shutout. She had a no-hit bid going for 5 and 2/3 innings until a double from ECC's Anna Hawkins ended that attempt.

Luke Daghir throws one-hitter as Crusaders win

The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team used the one-hit pitching of Luke Daghir to advance to the finals of the Elk County Baseball Tournament with an 8-1 win over the Ridgway Elkers Friday at Berwind Park.
Elk Catholic takes on Johnsonburg today at noon for the tournament title.
Daghir gave up a single, walked one and struck out seven for Elk Catholic.
Josh Mitchell started on the mound for Ridgway, going 5 2/3 innings and giving up eight hits, walking five and striking out eight. Kevin Kilhoffer worked 1/3 of an inning of relief.

Johnsonburg advances to finals with 10-3 win

The Johnsonburg Rams used 12 hits on their way to a 10-3 victory over the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen in the opening game of the Elk County Baseball Tournament played at Berwind Park.
The Rams will meet the Elk County Catholic Crusaders today at noon in the championship game. Elk Catholic beat Ridgway 8-1 in the second game Friday. St. Marys and Ridgway were to meet at 10 a.m. this morning in the consolation game.
The Rams used strong hitting and aggressive base running to record the victory. Their pitchers, while not overpowering, were able to record the outs.

DuBois edges Dutchmen 2-0 in pitcher’s duel

St. Marys Area’s Kevin Hoy and DuBois Area’s Garrett Peterson locked up in a pitcher’s duel Thursday afternoon at Berwind Park as each threw a three-hitter. Unfortunately for the Dutchmen, one of those hits was a home run by Peterson and an RBI single by Adam Young.
Hoy went all seven innings for the Dutch, giving up three hits, walking four and striking out six. Peterson went the distance for the Beavers, giving up three hits, walking one and striking out 13.
“Kevin shut down a good hitting team,” said St. Marys coach Tony Azzato. “Unfortunately, Peterson was sitting on a curveball.”

Dutch baseball rallies to beat Brookville Raiders 10-8
