Crusader soccer comes up short against Punxsutawney

KERSEY – The Elk County Catholic boys soccer team was edged 2-1 by the visiting Punxsutawney Chucks on Tuesday evening in a game played at Angela Huey Memorial Field in Fox Township.
"I think it was a great game. I think the fans got exactly what they were looking for. It's nice to see an improvement for our kids. I wish Punxsy luck and we'll build on the game and move forward," said ECC coach Adam Bailey.

Dutch rally in second half to beat Bulldogs 21-13

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen rallied to beat the Redbank Valley Bulldogs Friday night at Dutch Country Stadium on Senior Night for the Dutch.
The Bulldogs held a 13-7 lead at the half, with the Dutch scoring seven points in the third and seven in the fourth quarter to win the contest 21-13.
“This was a good win, a tough win,” said St. Marys coach Joe Schlimm. “We were not at our best tonight, but we found a way to get it done.”
“We had four kids (starters) that didn’t dress tonight. Give credit to the other kids who stepped in for them tonight,” he added.

Crusaders fend off Wolves 13-6

KANE – With 36 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Kane was down 13-6 and was facing fourth and long from about the 26-yard line. With a chance to tie the game, quarterback Sean Jordan put a nice pass into the endzone; however, Elk Catholic's Pat Brennen was the player on the receiving end of that pass, sealing the Crusader victory with the interception.

SMA’s Amy Orr wins D9-AA singles crown

DuBOIS - St. Marys Area sophomore Amy Orr won the District 9 Class AA Singles Tennis Championship Wednesday afternoon at the DuBois Area High School courts.
Orr defeated Brockway’s Brittany Johnson in the championship match 6-3, 6-3.
In the first set, Johnson opened a 2-0 lead. Orr battled back to knot the set at 2-all. It was tied at 3-all before Orr took control and went on to win the first set 6-3.

ECC’s Kristy Hanes qualifies for PIAA Western Regional

Elk County Catholic’s Kristy Hanes qualified for the PIAA Girls’ Western Regional Golf Tournament by tying for second place at Tuesday’s District 9 Girls’ Golf Championship held at Kane. The top three golfers qualify for the Western Regional.
The Western Regional is set for Tuesday, Oct. 18 at the Toms Run Golf Course in Blairsville.
Redbank Valley’s Samantha Dinger placed first with her 84. Hanes and Union’s Larissa Roberts tied for second with 87s.

Crusaders take 1-0 OT win over Dutchmen

When it comes to cross-town rivalry boys' soccer games, there is just something about overtime.
Of the three times the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen and Elk County Catholic Crusaders have played each other this season, the last two games have ended up going into overtime. The Crusaders have emerged the victor of all three match-ups between the two teams this season, notching the third win with a 1-0 score on a goal by Sam Mosebarger a few minutes into the first overtime period in a match played at the SMAHS soccer field on Tuesday afternoon.

Lady Crusader soccer ties Curwensville Golden Tide

KERSEY - It was another nail-biting outing for the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders varsity soccer team Monday afternoon as ECC tied the unbeaten Curwensville Lady Tide 2-2 in a game played at Angela Huey Field.
    The game was the fourth overtime contest this season for the Lady Crusaders. ECC is 1-1-2 in the extra time games.
    Sister pairs were the story during the match. Elk Catholic scored first with 30:33 left to play in the first half. Senior Abbi Petrosky got the goal while her sister, freshman Erin Petrosky, had the assist.

Crusaders shut out Rams for 34-0 Homecoming victory

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders picked up a 34-0 Homecoming victory over the Johnsonburg Rams on Friday evening in a game played at Dutch Country Stadium in St. Marys.
"It was a good team effort and a good Homecoming win," said ECC coach Travis Skrzypek. "This was a trap game. We had a nice game last week coming into this one. It was hard keeping their (the team's) focus a little bit."

Moniteau Warriors hand Dutchmen 39-15 setback

WEST SUNBURY - The Moniteau Warriors handed the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen their first loss of the season last night by a 39-15 score in a KSAC game played at Moniteau.
The Warriors are now 5-0 on the season, while St. Marys slipped to 4-1.
It was the big plays that gave the Warriors three of their touchdowns, as Dustin Geagan scored on 45- and 89-yard runs and Ethan Pry scored on a 40-yard play.
“I give Moniteau credit. We got outplayed. Moniteau has a nice football team, very physical,” said St. Marys coach Joe Schlimm.

Lady Dutch volleyball blanks Brookville 3-0

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch volleyball team recorded a 3-0 victory over the Brookville Lady Raiders last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Lady Dutch took the first set 25-9, won the second set 25-16 and won the third set 25-12 to win the match.
The St. Marys squad served very well in last night’s contest as both Lauren Dalessandro and Sami Hanes recorded 13 service points each. Abbey Cribbs had eight service points. Dalessandro had seven aces, while Hanes had four.
“Overall, at no time did we slack off tonight,” said St. Marys coach Erica Vogt. “When we got the ball, we played.”
