Spring is a time of renewal

April 19, 2011

Some people make their resolutions at New Year's, feeling it's a fresh start. They vow to tackle all kinds of things they don't like about their current state of affairs or make pledges to themselves to improve their lives, whether it involves their health, wealth, relationships or other personal issues. I personally think New Year's has become an over-commercialized holiday like many others. It has turned into a couple-centric, party-'til-you-drop, live-while-you can event rather than a reflection on years past and a resolve to make positive changes in the years ahead.

Thanks a lot, Punxsutawney Phil

Dear Punxsutawney Phil,

I was giving you the benefit of the doubt about spring arriving. Even though the weather has been pretty cold and rainy over the past few weeks, I told myself to be patient. But this is going too far.

Another milestone in college football - 400 career wins for Joe Paterno, coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions. I happened to be at the Nov. 6 game to witness this bit of history. Now, it may not be as important to our overall historical view as, say, women's suffrage or landing a man on the moon, but still, for Penn State fans and for college football, it was definitely a momentous occasion.

As I was editing a story Sunday night, I read about Mr. Tom Heindl of the local In Town Gardeners Club. This club is a group of volunteers who spend time doing all kinds of garden-related activities, and one of those activities is beautifying downtown St. Marys during various seasons by planting and placing containers of flowers in various locations.

Is it safe to cross the street?

It's nice to be back in St. Marys after having moved away for a number of years. As the new editor of The Daily Press, I am beginning to get re-acclimated to the area. I'm seeing many familiar faces and meeting many new ones, and I'm learning where people go to shop, eat and play. It's been fun driving around town to see some of the changes that have taken place, as well as experiencing the comforting feeling that some things have stayed the same.
