Deadline extended for business of year nominations

The St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce has extended its deadline for submissions for the 2010 "Business of the Year" nominations until Jan. 7.
The awards will be presented at the Chamber's annual banquet on Saturday, Jan. 29 at the Red Fern. Award finalists are invited to attend the banquet, where the winners of the Small Business of the Year, with 25 employees or less, and Large Business of the Year, with 26 or more employees, are announced.
Anyone may submit nominations for any Chamber business member. Self-nominations are also being accepted.

Conservation District to work with Nature Abounds

The Elk Conservation District voted unanimously to engage in a partnership with the Nature Abounds program.
“With regards to projects, it's getting kind of busy, some new things are coming about,” said Elk County Watershed Specialist Kim Bonfardine. “It is the old Senior Environmental Corps (SEC), they used to be called the SEC-- Nature Abounds took over this program again.”

Lady Crusaders edge Ramettes for tourney title

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders captured the ECCHS Girls’ Junior Varsity Basketball Tournament Tuesday night by edging the Johnsonburg Ramettes 32-31 in double overtime.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch won the consolation game by defeating Ridgway 35-25.

A foul shot by Chiara Genevro in the second overtime gave the Lady Crusaders the 32-31 win over Johnsonburg.

Johnsonburg Rams win JV tournament

The Johnsonburg Rams handed the Elk County Catholic junior varsity squad a 43-34 setback in the finals of the Elk County Catholic Junior Varsity Tournament to claim the championship. The tournament was held at the ECCHS gyms over the past two evenings. In the consolation game, the Ridgway Elkers defeated the St. Marys Area JVs by a 56 to 47 score to claim third place.

The Johnsonburg Rams JVs defeated Elk County Catholic 43-34 to claim the championship of the Elk County Catholic Boys' Junior Varsity Tournament last evening.

Elk Catholic junior high team wins tourney title

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders junior high squad defeated the Ridgway Elkers by a 42 to 25 score to capture first place in the Elk County Catholic Junior High Holiday Tournament held at the gyms at Elk Catholic.
The Brockway Rovers finished in third place, defeating the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch junior high team by a 43-16 score in the consolation game.

Elk Catholic was in control of the game against the Elkers from start to finish, outscoring the Ridgway boys in every quarter.

Commissioners approve budget

The Elk County Commissioners passed the $28 million county budget yesterday morning during a short board meeting.
"Our budget has been on display for the past 20 days for the citizens of Elk County to go over our plan," said Elk County Commissioner Ronald T. Beimel.
The spending plan totals $28,199,038.26. The budget includes the $5 per capita tax and the hotel tax, which is not received by the county.

Friedl calls for more signage along Bavarian Hills Road

St. Marys resident Elizabeth Friedl recently called city council's attention to the need for better signage on Bavarian Hills Road in St. Marys, particularly in the area of what Friedl described as a "blind turn" at the top of a hill.
Friedl noted that she had spoken to city manager Dave Greene about the issue several years ago, but the problem has never been corrected.
"You have no warning at all that it is a blind spot," Friedl said.
She added that she was particularly concerned about individuals not familiar with the area having problems navigating the roadway.

Marcellus Shale monitoring project in the works

During Monday night's Conservation District meeting, Elk County Watershed Specialist Kim Bonfardine announced a new monitoring project in the works to keep an eye on the Marcellus Shale drilling.
“My next project that I have on the list is called the Elk County Monitoring Project (ECMP),” Bonfardine said. “I'm trying to set up a monitoring project for whenever these wells are going to be drilled.”
According to Bonfardine, the drilling can be kept track of with data loggers that will be put in the streams.

John G. Herzing

John G. Herzing, 74, of 164 Terrace Road, St. Marys, died at his home on Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010 following a brief illness.
He was born September 11, 1936 in St. Marys, a son of the late John A. C. and Bertha Weinzierl Herzing.
On May 16, 1959 in Queen of the World Church, he married Loretta Anderson Herzing, who survives.
He was a member of the St. Mary's Church. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era. He retired from Stackpole Carbon Company after more than 38 years of service. He later worked at Windfall Products and for the County of Elk. He was an avid golfer.

Crusaders, Rams reach tourney finals

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders will meet the Johnsonburg Rams this evening at 8 p.m. in the finals of the ECCHS Boys’ Junior Varsity Basketball Tournament.
Elk Catholic advanced to the finals, rallying to beat the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen 51-43, while the Johnsonburg Rams rolled over the Ridgway Elkers 64-35.

The first period of play saw the Dutch dominate the Crusaders as they opened an 18-7 lead. Elk Catholic outscored St. Marys 11-10 in the second period to cut the St. Marys lead to 28-18 at the half.
