Brian E. Zuchowski, 55, of 124 Locust Rd., St. Marys, died at his home on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012 following a brief illness.
He was born April 29, 1956 in St. Marys, a son of the late Adam and Doris Smith Zuchowski.
Brian was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of St. Marys Area High School. He was employed at Gasbarre Products for many years. He enjoyed playing darts and trips to Salamanca.Â He was also an avid Steelers fan.
Michael B. Proudfit, 19, of 497 Walnut St., St. Marys, died Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012 at the Altoona Hospital as a result of a motor vehicle accident.
He was born May 19, 1992, in Portland, Ore. He had resided in St. Marys since 2000.
He was a graduate of Elk County Catholic High School, Class of 2010, had attended Clarion University and was employed by Allegheny Coatings in Ridgway. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, former member of the St. Marys Area High School swim team, the Blue Tide swim team and had been on the Clarion University swim team.
Shannon N. Mecca, 30, of 128 North St. Marys Street, St. Marys, died on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012 at her residence.
She was born Jan. 20, 1982 in Miami, Fla. She was a lifelong resident of the area and graduated from the St. Marys Area High School, Class of 2001.
Pauline H. Fritz, 87, a resident of Pinecrest Manor and formerly of Johnsonburg Road, St. Marys, died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012 at the Pinecrest Manor after a brief illness.
She was born July 24, 1924 in St. Marys, daughter of the late John A. C. and A. Bertha Weinzierl Herzing. On Sept. 5, 1949, in the St. Maryâ€™s Church, she married Harold J. â€śHalâ€ť Fritz, who preceded her in death on Oct. 23, 1996.
Michael J. Carr of 641 Shelvey Summit Road, Kersey, died suddenly at Elk Regional Health Center, on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012. He was born March 15, 1955, in Hope, Maine, the son of Clarence J. and Madine L. LaBranche Carr. On August 7, 1977, he married Judith A. Caggiano, she survives. Michael was employed at Penncon and Ridgway Steel Fabricators, as a fitter welder and later at Keystone Carbon Co. in St. Marys, prior to starting his flooring business, Mikeâ€™s Custom Services in 1996. He was a member of the Ridgway Elks Lodge, St.
SMA sending seven wrestlers to NW Regional
CLARION - St. Marys Area wrestler Joe McLaughlin won the District 9-AAA 182-pound weight class championship Saturday at the District 9-AAA Individual Championships held at Clarion Universityâ€™s Waldo Tippin Gymnasium.
The Dutchmen of coach Dominic Surra will be sending seven wrestlers to the AAA Northwest Regional Tournament scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Altoona Area High School Field House.
BRADFORD - The St. Marys Area swim and dive team proved that they can rise to the occasion on Friday night when the Dutchmen captured the District 9 Swim & Dive Championship crown at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradfordâ€™s Duke Aquatic Center. The Lady Dutch finished third in the field of five teams.
During 2011, the Crystal Fire Department responded to 276 incidents, an increase of 14 from the previous year, according to Bill Kraus, fire chief, during a recent City Council meeting where he presented the organization's annual fire report.
"Out of the 277 calls, we only had seven fires," Kraus said. "When people are in trouble, they call the guys in the big red trucks. We don't have a problem with those calls."
In 2011, there were 114 general alarms, 60 public service calls, 40 investigations, 39 rescue calls and 23 training events.
The St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce presented "A Night at the Races" on Saturday evening as part of their annual dinner. Attendees gathered inside the Red Fern, which was transformed into a horse racetrack in conjunction with the event's theme.
