Bernice A. Chase

June 6, 2011

Bernice A. Chase, 83, recently of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of Silver Creek Terrace and 310 W. Mill Street, St. Marys, died on Monday June 6, 2011 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a brief illness.
She was born February 14, 1928 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Cornelius and Beatrice Lawton Haney.
On August 26, 1965 in Sacred Heart Church, she married Joseph J. Chase, who survives.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Church. She worked at Stackpole Carbon for more than 23 years and enjoyed reading and spending time with her grandchildren.

Paul C. “Ladd” Stahli

Paul C. “Ladd” Stahli, 88, of Oak Street, Johnsonburg, died Sunday, June 5, 2011 at UPMC Hamot of Erie after a brief illness.
He was born December 24, 1922 in Ridgway, son of the late Paul J. and Helena A. (Kilhoffer) Stahli.
On October 11, 1947, he married Florence “Sisser” (Yonker) Stahli, who preceded him in death on March 26, 2001.

SMAHS grads use past lessons for future plans

St. Marys Area High School Class of 2011 student speakers Natalie Schwer, salutatorian, and Gianna DeMuro, valedictorian, recollected high school memories and hopes for the future during the school's annual commencement program held Friday evening.
As part of Schwer's speech, she referenced lessons portrayed in the Disney movie "Finding Nemo" as to what the new graduates may encounter in the real world following high school, including making new friends and embarking on a journey of self-discovery.

Municipal authority reaches agreement with Hunt Marcellus

JOHNSONBURG – Through the course of several weeks of negotiations, the Johnsonburg Municipal Authority [JMA] has reached an agreement with Hunt Marcellus Operating Company, LLC, to sell treated water on an "as-needed" basis for use in its Marcellus Shale gas drilling operations.
One of the obligations of the agreement Hunt has already fulfilled is to make a $500,000 capital contribution to the Johnsonburg Municipal Authority for the purpose of making capital improvements to their water supply system in order to make available 300,000 gallons of water per day by Aug. 1 to Hunt Marcellus.

Lucille C. "Lucy" Deemer

Lucille C. "Lucy" Deemer, 78, of Pinecrest Manor and formerly of 108 Irishtown Road, Kersey, died on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at Pinecrest Manor.
She was born May 2, 1924 in Johnsonburg, a daughter of the late Oran and Elizabeth Silvis Corbet. On March 24, 1944 in Brookville, she married the late Charles Lee Deemer Sr., who preceded her in death on October 17, 1976.

Arthur N. Hillebrand

Arthur N. Hillebrand, 82, of 1046 E. Eschbach Road, St. Marys, died on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at Hamot Medical Center in Erie following a short illness.
He was born December 6, 1928 in Ambridge, a son of the late Joseph and Ida Hillebrand.
On October 28, 1950, in St. Mary's Church, he married the late Lillian "Mickie" Samick Hillebrand, who preceded him in death on December 5, 1995.

SMAHS celebrates Class of 2011

On Friday evening, 165 members of the St. Marys Area High School Class of 2011 gathered with their family and friends in celebrating their high school career as part of the school's 115th annual commencement program.
Class President Shelby Zomcik acted as the Mistress of Ceremonies and offered brief remarks along with fellow student speakers Natalie Schwer, salutatorian, and Gianna DeMuro, valedictorian.

Wolfel pleads guilty to arson

June 3, 2011

Philip Bradley Wolfel, 23, of 5448 Rasselas Rd., Wilcox, pleaded guilty to one count of arson and related offenses, a grade-one felony, when he appeared before 59th Judicial District Judge Richard Masson in the main courtroom of the Elk County Courthouse during the morning session of Return Day on Friday. As a result of his guilty plea, Wolfel was sentenced to incarceration for a period of no less than four years to no more than 15 years at the State Diagnostic and Classification Center in Pittsburgh.

Leuschel pleads guilty to charges related to theft of over $200,000

RIDGWAY - Laurene L. Leuschel, 51, of St. Marys, pleaded guilty to the charges of theft by unlawful taking or disposition, a grade-three felony; and tampering with records or identification, a grade-one misdemeanor, when she appeared before 59th Judicial District Judge Richard Masson in the main courtroom of the Elk County Courthouse during the morning session of Return Day on Friday. Sentencing in the matter was deferred until after the completion and receipt of a pre-sentence investigation report, which will include a forensic mental health evaluation conducted by Dr. David Webster.

Graphics business holding grand opening Saturday

ST. MARYS - Fourth Floor Graphics, which does full-graphic, high-definition signs, banners, vehicle lettering, wraps, guitar skins, shirts and hats, is holding its grand opening Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at its location at 106 South Michael St. in downtown St. Marys.
The business is a family affair, owned by Dave Lowe, his father, Wayne, and his brothers, Tim and Scott.
Dave Lowe said the business will offer various services to the area.
