Dale L. Wolfanger

Dale L. Wolfanger, 73, of 475 Hunts Run Rd., Emporium, died at DuBois Regional Medical Center in DuBois on Monday, Feb. 6, 2012 following a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb. 1, 1939 in Austin, a son of the late LaVerne and Elva Fowler Wolfanger.
He married Carolyn Kamats Wolfanger, who survives. They recently celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary.
Years ago Mr. Wolfanger served with the U.S. Army.

Board approves advertising of vacant Council seat

In a 4-3 decision, the St. Marys Vacancy Board voted to advertise for candidates for the empty City Council position as opposed to appointing Tom Farley, the fourth-place candidate in the November 2011 general election.
The board met on Monday evening following the City Council workshop. Those casting votes to advertise the position were council members Greg Gebauer, Nedward Jacob, Mayor Sally Geyer and Vacancy Board Chairman Bob Ordiway. Councilmen Dick Dornisch, Bob Roberts and Dan Hepner cast opposing votes.

DuBois Beavers down Dutch wrestlers for 9-AAA title

DuBOIS - The DuBois Area Beavers wrestling squad captured the District 9-AAA team championship on Saturday by defeating the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch 55-13 in the title match held at the DuBois Area High School.
“That was a tough match,” said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra. “We were certainly the underdogs today.”
“We got experience wrestling in the championship match. Eleven of our 14 starters are either sophomores or freshmen,” said Surra.
“DuBois wrestled well. We were going to wrestle our best against their best. Hopefully, we can build on this,” said the coach.

Dutch gymnasts finish regular season with win over DuBois Friday

DuBOIS – The St. Marys Area High School gymnastics team finished out their regular season with a 121.6-117.6 win over the DuBois Beavers on Friday evening during a meet held at the DuBois Area High School.
"It was a nice way to finish out the regular season," said St. Marys coach Irene McCandless. "The St. Marys team had a pretty even match-up with DuBois, with the top three awards split pretty evenly between both teams."

Area residents encouraged to help curtail blood shortage in region

As February begins, typical winter weather conditions and a higher-than-normal amount of people with colds and other lingering illnesses have contributed to a shortage in the region's blood supply.

Library hosts writers' contest kickoff

On Saturday morning WPSU visited the St. Marys Public Library to kick off the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest, geared toward kindergarten through third grade students.
"It’s a national initiative designed to promote the advancement of children’s reading skills through hands-on, active learning," said Bianca Barr, Penn State Outreach Marketing and Communications.
Penn State Public Broadcasting has partnered with WQED in Pittsburgh and West Virginia Public Broadcasting to offer this contest to children across Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Mary R. (Mae) Sorg

Mary R. (Mae) Sorg, 93, of 412 Brusselles St., St. Marys, died Friday, Feb. 3, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
She was born on Aug. 20, 1918 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Joseph and Gertrude Schreiber Hammer.
On Dec. 27, 1950 in St. Benedict's Church in Daguschonda, she married Francis Xavier (Frank) Sorg, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 29, 1979.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1937. She had been employed by the Stackpole Carbon Co. in the accounting office until her marriage.

Darcy L. Allegretto

Darcy L. Allegretto, 54, of 6989 Glen Hazel Rd., Wilcox, died Friday night, Feb. 3, 2012 at her residence following an illness of one year.
She was born on June 29,1957 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Richard "Bill" and Lucille Winters Silcosky.
On July 15, 1989, she married Lawrence "Larry" Allegretto, and he survives.
Formerly of Johnsonburg, she resided in Glen Hazel since 1985. She graduated from Johnsonburg High School in 1975.
She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Johnsonburg. She enjoyed cooking and baking. She also loved to be outside doing planting and yardwork.

Brian L. Erich

Brian L. Erich, 44, of 133 Wehler Rd., St. Marys, died on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.
He was born Aug. 6, 1967 in St. Marys, a son of John "Jack" Erich, St. Marys, and the late Jean M. Vollmer Erich, who preceded him in death on April 16, 2010.
Brian was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of SMAHS, Class of 1985. He was employed at Metaldyne for more than 25 years. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and trapping. He also enjoyed planting outdoor food plots and shooting sporting clays. 

Sally “Marcella” Wheaton

Sally “Marcella” Wheaton, 60, of 3600 Festor Dr., Hermitage, died at her residence on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 after an extended illness.
She was born in St. Marys, daughter of the late Gilbert J. Krug and Martha (Detsch) Krug.  She married Dale Wheaton on Aug. 17, 1951, and he survives.  
Sally worked as a physician’s assistant with Sharon Regional Health Services and she attended St. John’s Episcopal Church. She loved crafting, especially needlepoint, and she also enjoyed golfing with her husband.
