Junkyard ordinance debated at Jay Twp. meeting

At Thursday's meeting of the Jay Township Supervisors, in the "old business" section of the agenda, supervisors and residents delved into the topic of the township's junkyard ordinance. Disagreement centered on the proposed limitation of licenses for junkyards in the area to five.
Area resident Robert Coppolo of Weedville asked supervisors how they arrived at the number five in determining how many licenses the township would provide.
"We just tried to come up with a number so we wouldn't have 20 of them," said Supervisor Francis Gustafson.

Dixie Gornati

Dixie Gornati, 48, of Byrnedale, died unexpectedly at home on Thursday, September 15, 2011.
She was born April 5, 1963 in Florida, the daughter of the late Cyrus Wells and Kathleen (Harlan) Rollick.  
She lived all her life in Bennetts Valley. She attended St. Marys schools and worked for many years in the St. Marys Area School District. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Crusader soccer team tops Dutchmen 2-1 in overtime

KERSEY – The colder weather on Thursday evening did not deter a sizable crowd from gathering at Angela Huey Memorial Field in Kersey to watch a boys' soccer match between the Elk County Catholic and St. Marys Area squads. They were not disappointed, as they were treated to a good, old-fashioned cross-town rivalry match-up between the two schools that ended with the Crusaders winning in overtime 2-1.
"St. Marys versus ECC is always a game for the fans and there was no disappointment tonight," said ECC assistant coach T.J. Weaver. "The Dutch came out to play tonight."

Mildred Elizabeth Bilodeau-Ford

In Red Bluff, Calif., on August 16, 2011, at the age of 88 years, Mildred Elizabeth Bilodeau-Ford died after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mrs. Ford was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frank Ford, whom she married 67 years ago in Emporium.
She will be profoundly missed by her children, Thomas (Marcella), Donna (Pat) and Robert (Jane); six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; her brother, Gerald Bilodeau

Rose J. Wolack

Rose J. Wolack, 88, of Silver Creek Terrace, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center.
She was born December 13, 1922 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late John and Mary Eskra Rollick.
On July 5, 1945 in St. Marys, she married the late Michael J. Wolack, who preceded her in death on October 7, 2004.

Ribbon cut to mark opening of Kinzua Sky Walk

MT. JEWETT --A tornado in July 2003 toppled the midsection of the Kinzua Viaduct and virtually knocked out the area's major tourist attraction.
Mother Nature won this battle, but the ingenuity of man has overcome that setback with the construction of the Kinzua Sky Walk-- a pedestrian walkway built atop the very towers that once supported the historic Kinzua Bridge near Mt. Jewett.

Jay Twp. residents question environmental impact of bridge refurbishment

At Thursday's meeting of the Jay Township Supervisors, one of the matters discussed by residents and officials was the recent descaling and painting of the Caledonia Bridge. Residents concerned that that the activity could pose an environmental hazard or warrant a fine from the DEP [state Department of Environmental Protection] pressed the supervisors for accountability.
"Did they procure permits before they started, from the state or the EPA, whoever you need to get permits from? You said you would check into the permits," said Nadine Pirrazi of Byrnedale.

Andrew Fiedor

Andrew Fiedor, 92, of Hoovertown Road, Penfield, died at home on Tuesday, September 13, 2011, following a lengthy illness.
He was born February 2, 1919 in Glasgow, Pa., son of the late Joseph and Catherine (Babbit) Fiedor.
He married Mary P. Overturf on July 3, 1948. She survives.
He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and worked as a mechanic for Prince Gallitzin State Park until retiring in 1981.
He enjoyed hunting, gardening and spending time with his family. He lived all his life in Glasgow and Penfield.

St. Marys Area golfers split with Ridgway and Kane

The St. Marys Area High School golf team split with Ridgway and Kane on Wednesday afternoon as they defeated the Kane Wolves 223-257, but lost to the Ridgway Elkers 208-223 on Wednesday afternoon at the Bavarian Hills Golf Course.
Ridgway's Jesse Reynolds was the overall medalist for the day with a three-over-par round of 38. Kane's Ryan Greto led his team with a 44. Low scorers for St. Marys Area were Rudy Gleixner and Sam Miller with 40s.

Lady Elker soccer downs Lady Dutch 4-1

The Ridgway Lady Elker soccer team handed the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch a 4-1 loss Wednesday afternoon in a match played at the SMAHS soccer field.
St. Marys came out the aggressor in the match, but could not keep the pressure on the Ridgway defense as they were not able to get a shot on goal in the early going.
Ridgway got on the board first when Rhianon Fowler scored with 33:32 left in the first half. She would score at the 20:25 mark, giving the Lady Elkers a 2-0 lead at the half.
