Mother and daughter complete 'Fight for Air Climb'

On Saturday, March 24, St. Marys residents Cheri Cheatle and her mother Henrietta completed the American Lung Association's Fight for Air Climb held this year at One Oxford Center in Pittsburgh.
The annual event is meant to raise awareness and funding for lung disease, including Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), a disease that Henrietta was diagnosed with six years ago.

Lady Dutch softball downs DuBois Area 8-5

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team raised their record to 2-0 on the young season as they defeated the DuBois Area Lady Beavers by an 8-5 score Monday afternoon at the SMAHS softball field.
The Lady Dutch took the early 5-0 lead after two innings, with DuBois scoring three runs in the third inning to cut the Lady Dutch lead to 5-3. St. Marys came up with three insurance runs in the fourth inning as they held on for the 8-5 win.

More than 35 attend Women In Timber Luncheon

More than 35 attended the 14th annual Women In Timber Luncheon held Monday at the Colonial Inn restaurant on Fraley Street in Kane.
The event is sponsored by the Kane-based Allegheny Hardwood Utilization Group (AHUG) for women involved in the timber industry.
Featured speakers for the luncheon included Jill Thompson of Kane, the local legislative representative for State Rep. Kathy Rapp (R-Warren), and Fritz Buehler Lecker of St. Marys, a legislative representative for State Rep. Matt Gabler (R-DuBois).

Grease is the word as this year's SMAHS musical

The popular hit movie "Grease" is being brought to the stage as this year's musical at St. Marys Area High School.
Showtimes are Thursday, Friday and Saturday beginning at 7 p.m. inside the school's Carpin Auditorium. Tickets are $7 each and will be sold at the door with no advance ticket sales or reserved seating. Run time for the show is expected to last between 1.5-2 hours with a 15 minute intermission.

Council discusses business items

At its recent meeting, St. Marys City Council approved a request introduced by Brad Brunner, pastor of the Faith Baptist Church in St. Marys, who was on hand as a representative of the St. Marys Ministerial Association. The association requested the use of the Diamond for a 6:30 a.m. Easter sunrise service on April 8, as well as on May 3 for a National Day of Prayer service at 6 p.m. Brunner said the Easter service should only last 45 minutes.

Edith E. Koch

Edith E. Koch, 98, died on Monday, March 26, 2012, at the Elk Regional Health Center. She was a former resident of Pinecrest Manor and Ridgmont Personal Care. Edith was born Sept. 5, 1913 in Ridgway to the late John and Matilda (Olson) Werner. On July 23, 1941, she married Francis J. Koch.
Edith was a longstanding member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, taught Sunday School, and was involved in the Altar Guild, WELCA, and was a member of Eastern Star. She graduated from the Ridgway High School in 1932. She was given a life membership to the Elks Lodge #872 after her husband's death.

Victims' advocates endorse feds' expansion of rape definition

On Jan. 6, 2012, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced revision to the Uniform Crime Report's definition of rape, broadening the federal criteria and for the first time including male victims and removing the previous requirement that a sexual assault be physically forced.
Wording of the pre-existing federal definition, in place since 1929, included “the carnal knowledge of a female, forcibly and against her will,” and related only to men engaging in nonconsensual coitus with women.

Wagner to draft city oil and gas ordinance

St. Marys City Solicitor Tom Wagner was approved to draft an ordinance for the Planning Commission's review to bring the city's oil and gas ordinance in compliance with new state regulations.
"I think it's doable to amend the zoning ordinance in a sensible fashion to incorporate all the restrictions the state law now imposes on land use regulations for oil and gas development," Wagner said. "I think you can amend your zoning ordinance effectively."
City Council voted unanimously on the issue during its recent meeting.

DDCC presents showcase

April School of Dance presented the Dynamic Dance Competition Company (DDCC) Showcase on Sunday afternoon at ECCHS. The company, overseen by artistic director Jennifer Blankenship of Kane, performed a total of 15 pieces, including six solos. DDCC consists of 18 dancers ranging in age from 9-18 years old who are divided into three different companies. The group recently concluded their competition season.
