Fox Supervisors hold reorganization meeting

January 4, 2012

The Fox Township Supervisors held their annual reorganization meeting Tuesday evening, followed by their regular monthly meeting.
Supervisor Mike Keller was voted board chairman, with supervisor Dave Mattiuz voted as vice chairman.
Kathy Dowie was retained as township secretary, as well as chairman of the Vacancy Board, while Randy Gradizzi was reappointed roadmaster. Jerry Zimmerman was voted assistant roadmaster, with Mattiuz casting an opposing vote. Mattiuz also opposed retaining Dave Pontzer as legal counsel for the township.

Commissioners begin calendar year

The Elk County Commissioners started 2012 yesterday morning with several reorganizational meetings to begin the calendar year.
Elk County Commissioner Daniel R. Freeburg, who took over as chairperson a month ago, will continue until April 30, 2013, completing a 16-month term as chair. Freeburg will be followed by fellow commissioner June H. Sorg from May 1, 2013 to Aug. 31, 2014; incoming commissioner Janis E. Kemmer will serve as chairperson from Sept. 1, 2014 to Dec. 31, 2015.
Applications are still being accepted for drinking water sampling.

Cynthia J. "Cindy" Wise

Cynthia J. "Cindy" Wise, 59, of Ebensburg, died on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011 at Windber Hospice following a two-year battle with cancer.
She was born July 15, 1952 in Spangler, daughter of the late Clyde C. and Rose A. (Flick) Kelly.
On Nov. 24, 1978, she married D. Bruce Wise, who survives.
She had been employed at the former Laurel Bank (FNB) and in the office of Wise Trailer Sales, a business she owned with her husband.

Brookville Raiders hand Dutch 54-33 D9 League loss

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team opened play in the District 9 League by hosting the Brookville Raiders Tuesday night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven, where the Raiders handed the Dutch a 54-33 loss.
The Raiders outscored the Dutch by a 27-13 margin in the first half and a 27-20 margin in the second half to record the victory.
“This was a bad night,” said St. Marys coach Mark Guido. “We got outcoached, we got outplayed from the beginning to the end.”
“Now we have three practices to get ready for Bradford,” said Guido. “We have to put this game behind us and learn from it.”

Guardian Angels receives grant to initiate new program

The Guardian Angel Center, Helpmates Charitable Giving Foundation, Inc., has recently received a grant from the Women Who Care to start a new program.
“We are working on starting a new disposable diapers program,” said Clythera Hornung, volunteer and co-grant contact. “It is a program that we have never done in the past, and it will be a nice benefit to our clients.”
Guardian Angels will lend a helping hand to those who may find it difficult to purchase diapers in an inexpensive manner.

Ridgway wins Elk County Holiday Basketball Tournament

ST. MARYS – Ridgway was spurred on by a 24-point performance from senior guard Eric Matheson as the Elkers won the Elk County Boys Holiday Basketball Tournament with a 45-38 victory over Johnsonburg Friday night at St. Marys Area High School.

Quiggle rallies Dutchmen to edge Crusaders 57-56 in OT

With the Dutchmen down by eight headed into the fourth quarter of Friday afternoon's Elk County Boys' Holiday Tournament consolation game against Elk County Catholic, St. Marys Area senior Justin Quiggle led a furious rally, adding 16 points to tie the score at 50-all at the end of regulation. The Dutchmen were then able to use that momentum to edge the Crusaders 57-56 in overtime to take the win.

Lady Crusaders capture 2011 Elk County basketball crown

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders stayed perfect on the season as they defeated the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch by a 41-35 score Friday night to capture the 2011 Elk County Girls’ Holiday Basketball Tournament crown. The Lady Crusaders are now 7-0.
The game was close for most of the 32 minutes of play. With 5:18 left in the game, the Lady Dutch were able to knot the score at 33 on a foul shot by Becky Krieg. In the closing minutes, Elk Catholic was able to outscore St. Marys 8-2 to win the game 41-35.
“It was nice to get the win,” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner.

Ramettes roll by Ridgway in consolation game

ST. MARYS – The Ramettes (3-5) were rarely contested Friday in a 54-20 victory over winless Ridgway in the consolation game of the 30th annual Elk County girls holiday basketball tournament.
The Ramettes were led by Brittany Watts with 15 points, while Chelsea Benson and Rhianon Fowler contributed 10 points each; Ridgway's leading scorer was Nicole Breier with eight points.
Johnsonburg applied heavy defensive pressure early on to trigger multiple turnovers in the first quarter en route to a 20-3 lead.
