Shirlee M. Salberg, 84, of 1939 Montmorenci Rd., Ridgway, died unexpectedly at her residence on Friday.
She was born Dec. 13, 1926 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Henry and Emma (Mader) Markert. She married Ray H. Salberg on June 18, 1949, and he preceded her in death on June 23, 2002.
Mary O. Mortle, 83, of St. Marys and previously of Versailles Boro, died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center.
She was born in Versailles Boro on July, 4 1928 to the late Louis and Anna (Ross) Onesi.
She married Homer W. "Hubbell" Mortle, who preceded her in death on Aug. 2, 1994.
BROCKWAY â€“Â The Elk County Catholic Crusaders came up a few yards short of beating the Brockway Rovers on Friday evening, losing 42-41 in 2 OT as their two-point conversion attempt failed.
"It was a hard-fought ball game the whole time," said ECC coach Travis Skrzypek. "Both teams played outstanding football. It was an exciting game. We just came out one point shy."
"We definitely played a solid game, I think. We didn't have any dumb penalties. We held onto the ball. We played a solid football game. We just didn't get it done at the end," Skrzypek added.
DuBOIS - The DuBois Area Beavers handed the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen a 27-12 non-league setback last night at the E.J. Mansell Stadium in DuBois.
While the Dutch scored the first points of the contest, the Beavers came back with 14 in the second quarter and outscored St. Marys 7-6 in the third period for a 21-12 lead. DuBois added a touchdown in the fourth quarter, making the score 27-12.
RIDGWAY - In the fifth day of testimony in the trial of Lawrence Earl Donachy on Friday, the defense called upon witnesses that included a sexual assault forensic examiner, former City of St. Marys Police officers and pedestrians who had seen lights on in Irene Challingsworth's residence the night of the murder. Donachy, 36, of St. Marys, is accused of the April 5-6, 1999 rape and murder of Challingsworth. The trial is being held at the Elk County Courthouse in Ridgway before a jury from Butler County and is presided over by President Judge Richard Masson.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ Born and raised in Johnsonburg, Bob Ford is now a published author. His work, titled "Beagle Tales," is a collection of his humor columns about beagles, life and the outdoors.
Ford is a 1990 graduate of Johnsonburg Area High School. He is the son of the late Harold and Paula Ford. His sister is Diane Del Rio of Johnsonburg. Ford has traveled from his town of State College for a book signing at the Johnsonburg Community Center Saturday, Oct. 15 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
RIDGWAY - Former St. Marys City Police Sergeant John Lovett and Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Dave Ray recollected the details of the Irene Challingsworth homicide on Thursday during the trial of Lawrence Earl Donachy, 36, of St. Marys. Donachy is charged in the April 5- 6, 1999 rape and murder of the 57-year-old St. Marys beautician.
A jury of Butler County residents listened to the officers' testimony during the fourth day of the 10-day trial being held at the Elk County Courthouse in Ridgway.
RIDGWAY - An expert forensic DNA scientist testified on Thursday, during day four of the homicide trial of Lawrence Earl Donachy, 36, who is charged in the April 5 or 6, 1999 death of Irene Challingsworth, a St. Marys beautician. The trial is being held at the Elk County Courthouse in Ridgway.
Pennsylvania State Police Forensic DNA Scientist Alex Glessner, employed for the past 10 years at the PSP Greensburg lab, provided extensive information on DNA profiling pertinent in the case.

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader girls' soccer team picked up a 2-0 win over the Lady Dutch on Thursday afternoon, in a game played under threatening skies at the SMAHS soccer field.
"Our girls played a good game, but Elk Catholic was the better team today," said St. Marys coach Dr. Bob Schmidt. "Mia Keener in goal, Caley Keister in the midfield and Holly Shields at forward played a really, really good game. Our captain Shannon Bridges was playing injured and she still played."
