Julia Karlechuck Berneche of Collingwood, Ontario, Canada, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010 in Collingwood Nursing Home.
She married George Berneche, who died in 1993.
Larry M. Stark, 75, of Grant Road, Ridgway, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010 at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
He was born Oct. 19, 1935 in Ridgway, the son of the late Melvin and Louise Balmer Stark.
On July 21, 1956, he married Virginia M. (Ginger) Boults of Johnsonburg, who survives.

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders advanced to the finals of the 31st annual Elk County Boys’ Holiday Basketball Tournament with a 64-52 victory over the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen last night at the SMAHS gym.
The Crusaders will meet the Ridgway Elkers in tonight’s championship game scheduled for an 8 p.m. start at the St. Marys Area Dutch Oven. Ridgway beat Johnsonburg 55-52 in overtime.
ST. MARYS – Elk County Catholic overcame a slow start Wednesday in the opening round of the county tournament to overpower Johnsonburg, 35-29.
Despite an early 17-10 deficit, the Lady Crusaders stormed back to outscore the Ramettes 25-12 to end the game.
The St. Marys Area High Lady Dutch advanced to the finals of the Elk County Holiday Tournament with a 65-36 victory over the Lady Elkers of Ridgway Area High in the opening round of the tournament, held at St. Marys Area High School on Wednesday evening.
The Lady Dutch will take on the Lady Crusaders, a 35-29 winner over Johnsonburg in the other opening-round game, in the tournament finals tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Dutch Oven.
Marie S. Carlson, 92, of 356 Toby Rd., Kersey died Monday, Dec. 27, 2010 at UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh following a brief illness.
She was born June 4, 1918 in Horton Township, daughter of the late Albert and Daisy (Moyer) Schreiber.
On Aug. 30, 1967, she married Charles R. Carlson, who survives.
Jean Marie Ryan, 84, of 232 George St., St. Marys, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 28, 2010, at the Elk Haven Nursing Home after a brief illness.
She was born July 26, 1926, in Byrnedale, daughter of the late George and Kathryn McDaniel Hetrick.
On Feb. 4, 1950, in St. Joseph's Church in Force, she married Daniel G. "Moon" Ryan, who preceded her in death on Dec. 4, 2007.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and attended Weedville schools. She was a former employee of Speer Resistor and retired from GTE Sylvania in 1986 after 30 years of service.
While Jan. 1 marks the beginning of a new year, it also marks the start of many New Year's resolutions, a majority of which pertain to weight loss, smoking cessation, decreasing debt or becoming more organized.
Elk Regional Health Center is offering several programs to assist area residents in keeping their resolutions. Among the Highmark Health Insurance-sponsored programs are the "Drop 10 in 10" weight-loss program, "Discover Relaxation" and "Personal Nutrition Counseling."Â
The St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce has extended its deadline for submissions for the 2010 "Business of the Year" nominations until Jan. 7.
The awards will be presented at the Chamber's annual banquet on Saturday, Jan. 29 at the Red Fern. Award finalists are invited to attend the banquet, where the winners of the Small Business of the Year, with 25 employees or less, and Large Business of the Year, with 26 or more employees, are announced.
Anyone may submit nominations for any Chamber business member. Self-nominations are also being accepted.
The Elk Conservation District voted unanimously to engage in a partnership with the Nature Abounds program.
“With regards to projects, it's getting kind of busy, some new things are coming about,” said Elk County Watershed Specialist Kim Bonfardine. “It is the old Senior Environmental Corps (SEC), they used to be called the SEC-- Nature Abounds took over this program again.”
