Dutch baseball downs Rigway Elkers in six innings

RIDGWAY - St. Marys Area baseball scored in four of the six innings played in a 10-0, 6-inning win over Ridgway Monday afternoon at Sandy Beach Recreational Park.
St. Marys was off to a fast start as Mitchell Meyer hit a home run to left with the first at bat of the game to put the Dutch up 1-0.

Lady Dutch fall to Williamsport 2-0 on senior night

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch were shut out 2-0 on senior night by the Williamsport Millionaires on Monday afternoon at the SMAHS softball field.
Both teams struggled to get their offenses going, with St. Marys Area only recording one hit while Williamsport had three. The Millionaires scored both of their runs in the top of the third inning.
"We played good defensively," said St. Marys Area coach Manny Gerarge. "We were making some contact throughout the game, but when we started the last inning we had some hard hits and they made a few good plays."

Children's book drive kicks off Friday with movie night

ST. MARYS - The Elk County Rural Reading Project is hosting a special movie night kickoff event Friday evening at South St. Marys Street Elementary School in an effort to collect 600 new books as part of the program's inaugural book drive event.

Conservation easements topic at task force meeting

RIDGWAY – Matt Marusiak of Western Pennsylvania Conservancy gave a special presentation on source water protection and conservation easements at Monday's meeting of the Elk County Gas Task Force.
Marusiak, a land protection specialist for the conservancy, has an office in Ridgway and a territory that covers the entire 12-county region of the PA Wilds. He has a degree in petrochemical engineering and has worked on the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission and for the planning department of Elk County.

GetGo opens today in Fox Township

OX TWP. – Area residents now have a more convenient way of redeeming their Giant Eagle fuelperks! as the chain opened one of three new GetGo locations today in Fox Township. GetGo is located at the former site of Country Fair along the Million Dollar Highway across from Wal-Mart.
According to a press release issued on Monday by Giant Eagle, the location is one of three new GetGo convenience stores and fueling stations opening today. The other two locations are in Brookville and Titusville.

Wallops Island trip revisited at SMASD meeting

Participants in this year's middle school World Studies Club's field trip to Wallops Island spoke before the St. Marys Area School Board of Directors at their recent meeting about the importance and positive impact of the annual outing.
SMAMS Guidance Counselor Kate McGonnell began by showing the board members a slide show of photos taken during the trip.
"The school board needs to see what happens on this trip because you approve it," she said.

Dr. Jerome W. Poulliott Jr.

Dr. Jerome W. Poulliott Jr., 82, of 560 Church St., St. Marys, died on Sunday, May 13, 2012 at Hamot Medical Center in Erie.
He was born Sept. 10, 1929 in Williamsport, a son of the late Jerome W. and Sarah Catherine Fague Poulliott.
On June 29, 1957 in Philadelphia, he married Kathleen Kearney Poulliott, who survives.

William A. Freeburg

William A. Freeburg, 78, of 153 Ridge Rd., Kersey, died Sunday, May 13, 2012 at the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home in Hollidaysburg.
He was born Jan. 3, 1934 in Toby, son of the late John and Esther Hedlund Freeburg.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Kersey High School, Class of 1952.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1956 to 1958.
He is survived by a sister, Marie Anstrom of Ridgway; and a brother, Robert Freeburg of Ridgway.

Stanley Kolby

Stanley Kolby, 74, of 3879 Rich Valley Rd, Emporium, died at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys, on Friday night, May 11, 2012.
He was born Dec. 27, 1937 in Renovo, a son of the late Chester and Rose Javornick Kolby.
He served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was retired from Sylvania in St. Marys, where he was a truck driver for many years. Years ago he worked for PennCentral & Conrail Railroad. He was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church, the K. of C. and the Miller-Raffaele Post 6221, VFW.

Council approves hazard plan, bids

St. Marys City Council recently approved a hazard mitigation plan, making the city eligible for emergency funding if the area should encounter a natural or manmade disaster.
"In the event there would be a natural disaster in St. Marys, in order for the city to be eligible for PEMA (Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency) or FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) funds, the city has to have this ordinance/resolution in place," explained St. Marys City Manager Dave Greene. "If a disaster was declared, no matter what type, the city will be eligible for funding."
