Local student headed to DECA Nationals in Salt Lake City

Larissa Chicola, a sophomore at St. Marys Area High School, is headed to the Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) nationals competitions this year in Salt Lake City, Utah.
While Larissa's road to the national level began with district competition followed by a third-place finish in states, it almost ended there as she found herself without the funds necessary to reach the national competition.

Lady Dutch softball defeats State College 6-1

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball squad recorded a 6-1 win over the State College Lady Little Lions on Tuesday afternoon during a cool and breezy contest at the SMAHS softball field.
State College took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but St. Marys quickly rallied, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead. The Lady Dutch added two more runs in the second inning and one in the fourth and sixth innings in the victory.
"We hit the ball tonight and made some key bunts and moved runners when we had to," said St. Marys Area coach Manny Gerarge.

Ronald C. Ecklund

Ronald C. Ecklund, 73, of 668 Washington Rd., St. Marys, died Tuesday morning, April 17, 2012, at Elk Regional Health Center following a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb. 3, 1939 in Ridgway, son of the late Charles M. and Martha L. (Fischer) Ecklund. On Nov. 11, 1983, he married Ann Werner Ecklund, who survives.

Elizabeth C. "Elsie" Desjardins

Elizabeth C. "Elsie" Desjardins, 87, of 100 Forest Rd., St. Marys, died unexpectedly at her home on Tuesday, April 17, 2012.
She was born Jan. 5, 1926 in Neunkirchen, Germany, a daughter of the late Martin and Ella Scheer Kraeber.
Mrs. Desjardins was a member of the St. Mary's Church. She retired from Pure Carbon after many years of service. She enjoyed playing cards and reading.
She was married to the late Francis R. Fodge, who preceded her in death in 1986. She was then preceded in death by her second husband, Gerard R. Desjardins, in 1988.

Crusader tennis team picks up 7-2 victory over Clearfield

The Elk County Catholic Crusader tennis team defeated the Clearfield Bisons 7-2 on Monday afternoon in a contest played at Benzinger and Memorial parks in St. Marys.

Hollidaysburg edges Dutchmen 3-2 Monday

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team lost a tough 3-2 contest to the Hollidaysburg Golden Tigers Monday afternoon at Berwind Park.
The Dutch took the early 1-0 first-inning lead. Hollidaysburg came back with two runs in the second inning to take the lead. The Tigers scored a run in the top of the sixth inning, while St. Marys scored a run in the home half of the seventh on a home run by Branden Tyger.
“That was Branden Tyger’s day today,” said St. Marys coach Tony Azzato. “He threw an outstanding ball game and had a huge home run.

Hotel project, contract matters approved by Council

During St. Marys City Council's meeting on Monday evening, City Manager Dave Greene provided his report on the various activities and events he recently attended, including an April 10 meeting held at North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission (NCPRPDC) to discuss the new hotel planned for downtown St. Marys.
Greene reiterated that North Central is administering the $3 million grant approved by Harrisburg, while Bob Ayoob has been approved as consultant on the hotel project. Funding has been approved, with documents being signed within 60 days of March 1.

Fire destroys home in Lamont

LAMONT – Area fire departments were dispatched to a structure fire Monday afternoon at 3:07 p.m. at 2145 Old Lamont Rd. in Jones Township.
Kane responded with Engine 56 and 57 and Rescue truck 51.
Tim Wile, chief of the Kane Volunteer Fire Department, identified the owners as Alan and Sheryl Pence.
