Arts Fest draws crowds to visitor center

BENEZETTE – The Elk Country Visitor Center in Benezette was a busy place Saturday but the crowd that gathered at the site was not there solely to see the elk. Instead, individuals of all ages travelled to the site to see the vendors who were set up selling a wide variety of items that were all made within the Pennsylvania Wilds during the inaugural Proudly Made in the Pennsylvania Wilds Arts Fest.

Beimel highlights historic downtown locations

On Sunday afternoon, local historian Ray Beimel hosted a walking tour of the downtown area as a fundraiser for the Heritage Preservation Group, which provides and maintains many of the flowers that decorate downtown St. Marys.
The group not only paused in front of historically significant sites, but Beimel also led them through some locations, such as Sacred Heart Church, while sharing some interesting tidbits of the community's history.

Lady Crusader softball wins PIAA Class A Championship

UNIVERSITY PARK — STATE CHAMPS.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team captured the 2015 PIAA Class A Softball championship Friday afternoon at Beard Field at Nittany Lion Softball Park on the campus of Penn State University by defeating the Conemaugh Valley Lady Blue Jays 7-0.
Abbey Bauer threw a no-hitter for Elk Catholic. She went all seven innings walking two, hitting one and striking out five.
"Abbey (Bauer) threw a great game and the defense behind her played extremely well," said ECCHS coach Digger O'Dell.

Celebration honors new state champions

The Elk County Catholic High School Lady Crusader softball team was welcomed home Friday night by a parade of emergency response vehicles that led them on a parade through town with their sirens blaring and lights flashing. When the newly-crowned state champions finally reached ECCHS, a number of supporters were waiting for them.
After an extended celebration in the parking lot that featured lots of hugs, congratulatory remarks, and the release of a few maroon and gold balloons, the group moved into the school's auditorium for a brief ceremony.

Beagley settles in as new publisher

Harlan J. Beagley has been named the new publisher of The Daily Press, Ridgway Record and Kane Republican under Horizon Publications, Inc.
Beagley has extensive experience in print media having served previously as business and operations manager at the Killeen Daily Herald in Fort Hood, Texas, and the Copperas Cove Herald in central Texas.
He previously served as group publisher in central Washington state where he worked nearly all management positions at the Columbia Basin Herald, a daily publication, and the Royal Register, a weekly publication.

District approves personnel items

Among the latest personnel changes approved by the St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors are new hires of school drivers, support personnel, awarding of numerous supplemental contracts, a resignation, leaves of absences and transfer of support personnel.
All employment recommendations are provisional for 30 days pending receipt of Act 151, child abuse history background check, and Act 34, Pa. criminal history record, clearance documentation and pre-employment drug testing if applicable.

ECC softball team receives sendoff to state championship

The Elk County Catholic High School girls softball team received a warm sendoff Friday morning as they departed for the state championship game taking place at 3 p.m. at Penn State University's Nittany Lion Softball Park where they will take on Conemaugh Valley. A sizable crowd of parents, fellow students, teachers, staff and community members gathered at the school around 11 a.m. to wish the team good luck.

Sheriff responds to audit findings

RIDGWAY – Elk County Sheriff Theresa Merritt on Thursday morning responded to a published report concerning the county’s annual internal audit which cited "serious issues" with her department.
The sheriff was unavailable for comment Wednesday as Merritt was in Monroeville for sheriff’s continuing education training.
According to the audit report signed by Elk County Auditors Elizabeth A. Mader, also serving as chairperson, and fellow auditors Karen R. Gies and Jerry W. Goetz, the auditors "get no cooperation from the sheriff to resolve the many issues in that office."

SMAHS swim co-op approved with Ridgway

A cooperative sport agreement was approved by the St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors for the high school swimming program between SMAHS and the Ridgway Area School District.
The cost per participant is $525. Terry Straub, SMAHS student activities director, determined the cost and said this amount relates to the cost of what it would be to run the swim program including such expenses as officials, game management, swimsuits, and more. There is an amount set aside for Straub's salary and benefits as well as for his secretary and all the coaches.
