Crusader golfers edge Dutchmen in close match

In a case of cross-town rivalry at its best, the Elk County Catholic Crusader golf team edged the squad from St. Marys Area High School 224-225 in a close match played at the Bavarian Hills Golf Course on Thursday afternoon.
"It was as good of a match as we could have asked for," said St. Marys Area head coach Dan Vollmer. "Unfortunately for the Dutch, one of the players added incorrectly and had to take a higher score than they shot."
Eight players from each school participated in the match; however, only the top five scores from each team counted for their total.

Crusader golfers win tri-match

The Elk County Catholic Crusader golf squad picked up a pair of wins on Wednesday afternoon as they defeated the Johnsonburg Rams and the Kane Wolves in a tri-match held at the St. Marys Golf Club. Elk Catholic won the match with a score of 211. Johnsonburg had a score of 219, while Kane had a score of 260. The match featured eight golfers from Elk Catholic, five from Johnsonburg and six from Kane; however, only the top five scores from each team counted for the match.

Bonomo connecting Chamber, community

As the new Community Outreach Coordinator (COC) for the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce, Phoebe (Bonfardine) Bonomo is looking forward to reconnecting with her hometown through promoting and facilitating economic growth and community development.
Recently the Chamber hosted a Picnic on the Porch event to introduce Bonomo to the community, as well as to showcase the building's new front facade.

Area bird club taking flight

"Yellow-bellied sapsucker" may sound like an insult, but members of the newly formed Allegheny Highlands Bird Club know it's actually one of the many bird species living in the region. Club members are hoping to share their knowledge and enthusiasm about this bird and others with residents in Elk and surrounding counties.
"The area is really, really rich in birds and lots of different species of birds," said John Fedak, the club's president.

Ariannah Nicole Nero Rairdan

Ariannah Nicole Nero Rairdan, of 602 Washington St., St. Marys, died Friday, Aug. 26, 2011 at Pittsburgh Children's Hospital following a three-month premature delivery.
She was born Aug. 17, 2011 at DuBois Regional Medical Center, daughter of Patrick John Rairdan and Kayla Michelle Nero.
She struggled to survive for eight days, and for those eight days she was survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and paternal and maternal grandparents and great -grandparents, as well as friends of both families.

Edith F. Mrofchinski

Edith F. Mrofchinski, 90, of 403 Valley View Ave., and formerly of 102 Evergreen Dr., Ridgway, died peacefully Tuesday afternoon, August 30, 2011, at her residence surrounded by her family.
She was born June 4, 1921 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Jefferson P. and Emma (Dallenbach) Oertly.
She married Andy (Ezoc) Mrofchinski on Feb. 14, 1941. He preceded her in death on Jan. 23, 1997.

Law enforcement officials advocate firearms training with passage of Castle Doctrine

Changes to the 'Castle Doctrine' law, which provides for an individual's right to stand their ground and defend their home from an intruder or attacker, were enacted this past Saturday, and law enforcement officials are speaking out about how the public and firearm owners should best prepare themselves to handle such a situation.
Elk County Sheriff Jeffrey Krieg emphasized the importance of training.
"The more training you have, the less likely you are to have an accident or do something you regret," Krieg said.

Secco Designs launches 'Charity Proud 2011' fund drive

Secco Designs, LLC is launching their "Charity Proud 2011" fund drive tomorrow as a way to benefit a deserving nonprofit charity and one lucky customer.
"There's so much going on with the economy today that charities need more donations," said Mary Secco, owner of Secco Designs. "Our goal is to give away a sizable amount of money."

Titchner announces grant received for new baler

Elk County Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator Bekki Titchner announced during Tuesday afternoon's Solid Waste Authority meeting that she was successful in obtaining a grant from the Stackpole Hall Foundation to aid in the purchase of a new baler for the Community Recycling Center, which is located at the Stackpole Complex in St. Marys.

County recycling stands to lose significant amount of funding

The county's recycling program stands to lose a significant amount of state funding during the upcoming grant cycle, according to Elk County Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator Bekki Titchner.
"They are going to be cutting the amount of 904 funding that we can expect to get by about 40 percent and we're looking at losing at least $5,000," Titchner informed members of the Elk County Solid Waste Authority on Tuesday afternoon.
