Emporium apartments go up in flames

EMPORIUM – Authorities are still investigating the origin of a fire that spread through four apartment units early Tuesday morning in a West 4th Street house in Emporium.
Initial reports indicated smoke and flames showing at 234 W. 4th St. as Cameron County 14 (Emporium Fire Department), Emporium Ambulance, and St. Marys Ambulance were called out shortly before 3 a.m.

Assault charges against Ridgway man

RIDGWAY – Assault charges have been filed against a Ridgway man for a June incident of an argument escalating into a fight that left another man hospitalized.
Jeffrey William Reitz, 26, of 229 Ash St., Ridgway, is charged with a felony count of aggravated assault and a misdemeanor count of simple assault for a fight that occurred at his home on June 29.

Dutchmen top Rams 54-44 in consolation

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen picked up their first home victory of the season playing as the visitors in the SMAHS Dutch Oven on Saturday afternoon. After a close first half, the Dutch were able to open up a little breathing room against the Johnsonburg Rams in the second half and held on for a 54-44 win in the Elk County Boys' Basketball Holiday Tournament consolation game.

St. Marys girls basketball picked up its first win of the season with a 49-32 victory over Ridgway Saturday afternoon in the girls consolation game of the Elk County Holiday Tournament held at St. Marys Area High School.

Ridgway Elkers beat Crusaders in OT for boys County title

The Ridgway Elkers captured the 2014 Elk County Boys Holiday Basketball Tournament Saturday night at the St. Marys Area High School Dutch Oven by defeating the Elk County Catholic Crusaders by a 37-33 score in overtime.

Macy Neureiter maximized her points from the outside Saturday night just like ECC's senior class maximized their performance at the Elk County Holiday Tournament.
Neureiter finished with 20 points and six three-pointers as Elk County Catholic won 47-26 over Johnsonburg in the girls championship game of the tournament Saturday night at St. Marys Area High School.

Cribbs sentenced in burglary, thefts

RIDGWAY – A St. Marys man had multiple cases settled before President Judge Richard A. Masson Monday, including the February theft of multiple parking meters from the Brusselles and Depot Streets parking lots in St. Marys.
David Larry Cribbs, 19, of 155 Washington St., St. Marys, pleaded guilty to a felony count of receiving stolen property and a felony count of burglary for removing items from a storage building owned by Elk County Ammo and Arms.

Coaches vs. Cancer raises over $1,180

This year's Coaches vs. Cancer campaign, held throughout both days of the Elk County Holiday Basketball Tournament, raised $1,186.89 to benefit the American Cancer Society.
During halftime of the boys' championship game Saturday evening at the St. Marys Area High School Dutch Oven, SMAHS Activities Director Terry Straub read a brief message on behalf of the American Cancer Society, which expressed appreciation to the "coaches and players for lending their talent and faces to the 2014 Coaches vs. Cancer campaign."

Dorothy C. “Dottie” Bryington, 48, of Walnut Street, St. Marys, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2014 in Clearfield.
She was born March 9, 1966 in Kane, daughter of Donald Bedford of Kane and Martha “Sis” (Morgan) Bedford of Wilcox.
She was a graduate of Johnsonburg High School. She worked as a cook for local restaurants.
She was a member of the Wilcox Presbyterian Church, Wilcox Sportsman’s and the American Legion of Wilcox and Johnsonburg.
She lived in Wilcox most of her life until the past few years in Johnsonburg and St. Marys.
