Stadium renovations anticipated by school board

Much needed repairs to St. Marys Area High School's Dutch Country Stadium are anticipated to start at the end of the school year, according to Superintendent Brian Toth.
Among the scope of the project is field alterations, draining, minor bituminous paving, track renovations, fencing and miscellaneous alterations as well as sod replacement on the field.

New SMAHS club encourages community service

Students at St. Marys Area High School now have a new way to get involved in the community. On Monday evening, the St. Marys Area School District Board of School Directors unanimously approved the creation of a Pay It Forward/Student United Way club.
According to Jason Schreiber, the club's advisor who is also a teacher and coach at the high school, the idea for the club came about during the 2013-2014 school year when then principal Dr. Josh Williams was contacted by a representative of the United Way.

Library holding Pumpkin Decorating Contest

With Halloween only a few weeks away, the St. Marys Public Library is holding a Pumpkin Decorating Contest open to individuals of all ages. The decorating event will be held at the library tonight from 6:30-7:30 p.m., though individuals can also decorate their pumpkins at home and bring them to the library.
All participants are asked to provide their own pumpkin, and each entry should be decorated based on the theme of a book of the entrant's choice.

Carol Ann Burris

Carol Ann Burris, 77, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014 at Hamilton Hospital in Olney, Texas.
Carol was born Nov. 19, 1936 in Kosciusco County, Ind. to the late Harvey and Laura (Stump) DeFrees, Sr.
On Nov. 23, 1955 in Nappanee, Ind., she married Norman Burris. He preceded her in death June 23, 1991.

James S. Dworsky

James S. Dworsky, 89, of 522 Penn St., Johnsonburg, died Monday afternoon, Oct. 13, 2014 at Elk Haven Nursing Home in St. Marys following a lengthy illness.
He was born June 1, 1925 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Stephen and Violet Yeager Dworsky.
On May 5, 1962, he married Dolores Popielski in Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg, and she survives

Dennis C. Mertz

Dennis C. Mertz, 55, of 558 Brusselles St., St. Marys, died unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014 at his home.
He was born Sept. 30, 1959, a son of the late Walter Mertz and Anna Mae Wilson Mertz, who survives, of St. Marys.
On March 14, 1987 in Queen of the World Church, he married Lynn Mosier Mertz, who survives.
Denny was a lifelong resident of the area and graduated from St. Marys Area High School, Class of 1977. He worked at Keystone for more than 26 years and had been employed at Morgan AM & T for the past several years. He was an avid golfer and bowler and also greatly enjoyed sports.

Pre-K Counts funding two local programs

St. Marys Area School District will soon offer two pre-kindergarten programs as a result of $9.8 million in early education funding released by Governor Tom Corbett.
South St. Marys Street and Fox Township Elementary schools will host the classes, with 17 students each.
The programs will be offered through Cen-Clear Child Services, Inc., based in Philipsburg, which received $265,472 in funding.
Pre-K Counts is a program which provides families with pre-kindergarten educational program choices offered in a school, child care center, Head Start or nursery school.

Mildred M. Fitch

Mildred M. Fitch, 92, of Terra Cotta Road, Johnsonburg, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014 at Penn Highlands Elk.
She was born March 22, 1922 in Kane, daughter of the late William and Edith (Hepler) Wichman.
On June 29, 1946, she married Allen A. Fitch. He preceded her in death in 2000.
She served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946 as Corporal in WAC 1560th SCU. She worked at the Dr. McCleary Lobo Wolf Farm and Holgate of Kane. She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church. She enjoyed walking and playing BINGO.
She was born and raised in Kane and had been a Johnsonburg resident since 1946.
