Helen E. Urmann

Helen E. Urmann, 88, formerly of 340 Allenhurst Ave., Ridgway, died Friday morning, Dec. 5, 2014 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a brief illness.
She was born June 3, 1926 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Joseph V. and Ruth (McMackin) Urmann.
She had resided in Ridgway all of her life, and was a member of the St. Leo Catholic Church.
Helen enjoyed reading, gardening and playing bridge. She was a graduate of St. Leo High School and Seton Hill College.
She had been employed by Brockway Glass for 40 years.

Dallas used the 3rd quarter to put this game out of reach. After a tightly contested
first half the score was 14-7 in Dallas’ favor. Dallas was able to use an early
second half turnover to score a 24 yard touchdown pass from Tony Romo to Cole
Beasley. They used great field position to tack on 2 more touchdowns before the end
of the 3rd quarter to make the score 35-7. Chicago made the game somewhat close
thanks to a 21 point fourth quarter of their own, but it was too little, too late.

Lady Crusaders down Kane Lady Wolves 50-27

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team improved to 2-0 on the young season as they defeated the Kane Lady Wolves by a 50-27 score in a game played at Kane.

Fair funding formula in the works at SMASD

The St. Marys Area School District board of directors have voiced their support for a fair funding formula which calls for an efficient and equal system of public education that does not shift the burden to local taxpayers.
"There needs to be a fair funding formula that meets the needs of every type of district that there is. We can't keep going year to year saying, 'We don't have a clue of what we might be getting.' That's terrible for budgeting," said Superintendent Brian Toth.

Couple pleads guilty in bath salts ring

RIDGWAY – A St. Marys couple pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the July 17 drug busts carried out in St. Marys and Ridgway by the North Central Regional Drug Task Force.
Leif Eric Moats (known as Eric), 40, and Kristin M. Moats, 33, both of 325 Kaul Ave., appeared in Elk County Court before Judge Masson Monday morning. They were arrested along with Rachel Shrefler and Tammy Zawatski, both of Ridgway, and are believed to have all worked together in the sale and distribution of alpha-PVP, the drug commonly known as bath salts.

SMAHS students and faculty brighten holidays for area children

St. Marys Area High School students and faculty have demonstrated their holiday spirit by participating in the Giving Tree program sponsored by The Salvation Army.
Recently they have all pitched in and donated $2,000 worth of new clothes, toys, bikes, shoes and jackets for families whose Christmas would otherwise be bleak. 

After two mistrials, Ecklund pleads guilty

RIDGWAY – Brandon J. Ecklund, 22, of Ridgway, pleaded guilty Monday morning to a misdemeanor charge of corruption of minors, which had been downgraded from a felony charge.
District Attorney Shawn T. McMahon informed the court that the Commonwealth and the defense had worked toward a resolution given the cost and complications of prosecution.
He noted that the cost of prosecution was considerable as a key witness had to be brought here from South Carolina.

Crash on SR 120

Emergency responders were at the scene of a crash Monday evening on Ridgway St. Marys Road (state Route 120) in Ridgway Township. Elk Company 4 (Ridgway Fire Department) and Ridgway Ambulance were dispatched to the scene. No additional information was available at press time.

Historical society celebrates St. Marys' founding

On Sunday evening, roughly 100 people gathered at The Red Fern in Fox Township to celebrate the 172nd anniversary of the founding of Sancta Marienstadt–St. Marys–during the 52nd annual banquet of the Historical Society of St. Marys and Benzinger Township.
Each year, the historical society tries to hold the banquet on the Sunday closest to the anniversary of the founding, which occurred Dec. 8, 1842.

Dutch wrestlers open season with Kickoff Classic

The St. Marys Area Dutch wrestling team hosted their fourth annual Kickoff Classic on Saturday at the SMAHS Dutch Oven. This year's tournament featured eight teams, including the Dutchmen, who ended the day in sixth place.
