Crystal Fire Dept. honored with Fall Fest award

The Bavarian Fall Festival committee honored the Crystal Fire Department with a Community Appreciation Award during the event's opening ceremony held Friday evening.
The ceremony, which serves as the official kickoff to the festival, was hosted by emcee John Salter and began with the pledge of allegiance and a prayer offered by Fr. Richard Allen, pastor of Queen of the World Parish.

Kopp opening new health food business

New Horizons Healthy Foods, owned by LeRoy Kopp of St. Marys, will officially open its doors Monday, providing area residents with a location to purchase items such as smoothies, coffee, burritos and stir fry while also having a wide range of specialty products such as gluten free items, spices, and natural supplements in stock.
The mission statement of the business, according to Kopp, is "to provide reasonably priced, tasty, healthy, and nutritious food in a friendly atmosphere."

2014 SMAHS homecoming queen crowned

Holly Shields was named the 2014 St. Marys Area High School homecoming queen during a ceremony held at halftime of the varsity football game between the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen and Keystone Panthers on Friday night at Dutch Country Stadium. Shields was escorted by Shawn Anders. Olivia Pollino was the first runner-up, and she was escorted by Mike Wolfel. Pictured, from left, are Wolfel, Pollino, Shields, and Anders.

Everett Draucher Shea Jr.

Everett Draucher Shea Jr., 84, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2014 at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst, N.C.
A native of Pennsylvania most of his life, he graduated from Tarentum High School, Grove City College and the University of Pittsburgh. Everett worked for Keystone Carbon Company in St. Marys for 43 years as vice president of sales and marketing.

Paul A. Eckert, D.D.S

Paul A. Eckert, D.D.S, 84, of North Versailles, died after a long battle with cancer on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014.
He was born March 27, 1930 in St. Marys, a son of the late Vincent A. and Marie (Pistner) Eckert.

Crusaders hold on for 2-1 win over Rovers

Chances are, whenever the Elk County Catholic Crusaders and Brockway Rovers face off on the soccer field it is probably going to be a close, intense, and physical match. Thursday night’s contest between the two squads was no disappointment as ECC built up a two-goal lead and then held off an attempted late Brockway rally to win 2-1.

Three goals in the first half was all the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader soccer team needed as they defeated the Brockway Lady Rovers by a 3-0 score Thursday afternoon in a match played at Benzinger Park.

Elk County Catholic continued its strong start to the season with a 3-0 (25-5, 25-13, 25-15) win over Ridgway Thursday night at Ridgway Area High School.

Two more charged in heroin sting

Two more local residents have been charged in connection with the heroin trafficking bust that occurred Monday at 131 Hemlock Rd.
Aaron Christopher Johnson, 27, of 160 Country Ln., Kersey, and Kayla Ann Gillen, 24, of 122 Bennett Rd., St. Marys, were incarcerated at Elk County Prison Wednesday. They each face felony charges related to the sale and distribution of heroin.

Bow Glow 5K highlights fight against cancer

St. Marys will be set aglow next Friday evening as part of the annual Let Your Bow Glow 5K race/walk sponsored by St. Marys Pharmacy Home Medical and Penn Highlands Elk.
The festive party atmosphere at the St. Marys Eagles Club on Trout Run Road will feature a local celebrity DJ, music, hula hoop dancers, a sky lantern release, splatt tent and more.
"Everyone is welcome, young and old. Cancer doesn't discriminate and neither does this race," said Barb Schatz, event coordinator.
